I went away for the weekend, came back, powered up my computer and everything seemed to be working great. BUT after a few hours of use I noticed both My Computer (the directory) and Adobe PhotoShop refused to load.. Well, they'd eventually load, but this is after 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile the rest of the PC is working fine - accessing both programs, files and folder directories.
The only things that have changed since last time I used the comp was that I took out an plugged back in my Graphics Tablet. Not that I can see why that would make a difference..
I tried reinstalling Windows XP ontop of the exisiting set up and it seemed to fix the problem! After a few hours of use I powered donw the PC, went to bed, woke up and turned the computer back on. I noticed the problem had come back again!
Is there any advice you could give to solve this problem, 'cos it's driving me crazy. I don't want to have to sit here for 10 minutes every time I want to access My computer or Photoshop I just can't figure out what could have caused it!
cheers |

hrrm.... when you reinstalled Windows.. did you format the drive first? it sounds like you might be out of disk space perhaps? I dunno, wierd.

Sounds to me like your harddrive is somewhat defect or on its way to give up the go. If you're lucky, the problem might dissappear if you run scandisc and have it correct all errors on the drive. The sad part though, is that if your harddrive has stated to act weird there's a possibility that it will crash. Might happen tomorrow or in six years, but I would be careful and back-up all important information if I were you.
Better be safe than sorry. I lost all my work in a hdd crash a couple of years ago. And believe me - that sucks way more than.. uhm... most stuff that usually suck.
Good luck with solving the problem!

Well this sure isn't sounding good
jesusclone, no I havn't formatted the HD yet - that would have to be a last resort since I'd have to back up Gigs and Gigs of files, and don't fancy spending the next few days getting it all back to it's current state. I'm using a 60GB HD and have 30+ GB space free.
edraket, *cries* Any sugestions for getting rid of such a virus if that is what it is?
Jim S, I bet! Losing my HDD would be the end of my life.. almost! I've run scandisk and tried system restore, but with no luck I've only had this computer for 3 months!
I dunno what to do.. I suppose I could live with it as it is- that'd be better than having to format it *shrugs* |

I would say that you definitely should reformat it.
Back up all your importants files, burn all your mp3's, psd's and other things to disk and make sure you have all the drivers to all your hardware on disk.
After all has been burned and backed up do a complete reformat.
It should run like new after you've reinstalled your OS.
It's usually good to do so every six months.
How old is your computer and have you ever reformatted? |

Do you have a virus scanner? If so, which one? If not, why the hell not? :/ |

mindsiphon, A friend recommended the same thing.. I guess I'll have to, but think it's stupid. I've had my comp for 3 months- was bought brand new and was top range at the time. I remember having so many little problems getting XP and all my software installed so didn't want to reformat incase of reoccurring problems. I really can't afford to be without my PC for long period of time.
messybrain , I had the choice between buying antivirus software or a scanner and went for the scanner and was broke after that! My previous comp's been on the go for a 7 years without the need for virus protection so didn't think it was worth it, plus I'm pretty wise when it comes to email/web sent virus' and know what to look for.. |

Have you run scandisk from dos yet?
Also have you run disk defragmentor?
Also have you tried downloading free trial of Norton or Macafee antivirus? |

housecall.antivirus.com
check that site out to scan for viruses.
I think that the problem here -- since it's only trouble running photoshop and opening my computer is because the indices of your hd are probably shot. The my computer usually reads the NTFS index to gather information and well, photoshop does some swap file management. If you scan disk to see if there's any corrupt sectors or lost data. Make sure you do thorugh scandisk.
Also, you could try rolling back the driver on the wacom or reinstalling. If all else fails, just buy a new hd, hook it up to your computer, and copy all files you need to second one.
good luck. |
