Spooge: I have no money, no women, no time, and no talent. Thus I'll never be successful and able to afford something of yours. Lowly me. Thanks for the reminder ...
Phil: Nice to see your work again.
In support and honor of the great folks and artists on the POP team at Ubi (here's my lameass fan-art shit crap thing... it's meant to be a nice gesture, but...)
sucks balls as usual. |

hey guys n gals. got to work early today so i threw out a sketch before i started. Ref used, sorta.
spooge- thanks for the answer- actually i usually start out with the midtones myself. Having such a hard time though trying to figure out how much shadow to throw in depending on how strong the light is and so on...Dificult as hell. And knowing how much blue to throw in if you have a warm light is also very tricky. If you have any good lighting tips id love to hear it. But i suppose its mostly just look at refs and try to figure out how it all works. -the second question i asked, just forget it
Frost- cool threatening picture. nice light.
watmough- im really digging you last pictures. very moody.
keep it up yall.

Spooge - I know you're a fan of traditional Chinese painting. I just got back from a trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou, and I got to visit Ze Jian Art Institute, which is the best art school in China, and also where many of the current masters of Chinese traditional painting are trained. I think you'll find the design of the campus very cool, because they incorporated many of the motifs of traditional Chinese painting into the architecture, landscaping, and plants.
Check out the pictures I took here: http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/photography/1DMKII_portfolio/visions_of_china/hangzhou/hangzhou-3.htm |

Hehe, thanks. Those are terrible pictures though--not the best of my photography, since I was just tyring to record the campus. If you want to see much better photography of mine, you should look in this thread: http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=37848 |

Would it be redundant to say how amazing all of the work in this thread is? And just who the hell do I think I am posting after Hpx?

Watmough, he's is my favorite composer. My pet peeve is when I hear performances that are hazy and imprecise, I suppose because of the clich that his music is a musical equivalent to the visual impressionists. I wish the music was performed as it was written, and exactly that way. There is a great book of Debussy's collected writings (mostly as music critic) called "Debussy on Music." It is a great book for anyone involved in the arts.
|
Debussy is one of my favs as well. How do you feel about Ravel and Satie? Some say that Ravel is only worth something as an orchestrator--I'd say compared to debussy, that's about right. However, Debussy's compositions really shine with Ravel's orchestrations--like a match made in heaven.
If you have a chance, dig into some Sakamoto Ryuichi--he's a huge fan of Debussy's, and one of the best modern composers in this age. His compositions are heavily influenced by the French impressionists--but he's also very well-versed in a wide range of ethnic styles and time periods.
If you haven't yet, pick up Art of Noises's album, The Seduction of Claude Debussy. It's not really a tribute to him, but more of in praise of him and his contribution to 20th century music and beyond. The best electronic album in the last decade--excellent mixture of orchestral compositions and electronic stylings. The opera style singing grates on my nerves a little though, as I prefer a less contrived singing style. |
