hey folks. Great stuff here as usual. insane really the quality and quantity that keeps coming out of this thread.
cool stuff everyone.
spooge- got a question for you. when you paint do you start with the halftones or darks or brights? And how do you measure if two colors have the same value difference between light and shadow? Eyeball it? nice nudie btw
mitsui- cool leaves and nice lighting.
watmouth-that last one is great.
rhomb- xia- cool stuff there too.
ROCK ROCK ON!

I watched this guy paint a couple months ago. He did a painting similar to this one in just a few hours in acrylic. I don't think he uses oils at all. He works pretty fast. There's some cool lighting in his work. Of course, uh, I didn't capture it very well at all. His website: http://www.mcnaughtonart.com/
I totally screwed up the horizon/water level too... Crap! oh well, I already spent too much time on this... Next....

Spooge: Totally love the woman and baby(?) in ruins pic(s). Kinda like a mixture of Giger and Final Fantasy 7 art.
HPX: That knight painting is wicked! Really dynamic, I wish I could paint that well
Mitsui, really enjoying the simplicity in your speedies.
Sukhoi, the last one is cool, if only Terminator 3 would have had that great apocalyptic feel!
Reworked an older painting of mine, the foreshortening caused some major problems and I just couldn't figure out the legs.. Saved some progress pics so I can post it in my "How to not do something" tutorial thread

Rhomb, Rolthryn, Xia, Ax-hv
Stewart one, I generally start with middle values. This is a hold over from real paint, as white and black and other extremes can be hard to work over. This is not quite as large a limitation in digital, at least for me. Try it, pixels are cheap. I am not sure what you are asking in your second question.
BG, there's a baby in there? Off to the shrink with me.
Watmough, he's is my favorite composer. My pet peeve is when I hear performances that are hazy and imprecise, I suppose because of the clich that his music is a musical equivalent to the visual impressionists. I wish the music was performed as it was written, and exactly that way. There is a great book of Debussy's collected writings (mostly as music critic) called "Debussy on Music." It is a great book for anyone involved in the arts.
this was a sketch for a book cover for "When Gravity Fails" Anybody ever heard of it? Another direction was chosen for the final. There is a Leyendecker quote in here, much like Drew Struzan did with one of his Indiana Jones illos.

Spooge: Oh sorry, so it's the robe she's holding? This quote springed to my mind when I saw it the first time "Hope is stronger than fear; Love is greater than grief; Life is mightier than death; disaster is an incident of time. The shadows and rain of today will nourish the blossoms of tomorrow." and that's actually one of the themes in Square's new Final Fantasy VII "Advent Children" movie.. the world has been wrecked but new tomorrow will come.
Progress pics of my previous speedy (scroll down):

Base head for a character concept.. just something I use to flesh out the actual concept. hard to explain until you see the final.

rhomb - love everything you do, all looks so nice and solid.
Am liking the spooge book cover and the oDD fat head with stained skin (-baron harkonnen?)
tried the new painter trial. started doodling a generic head and 2 hours later I was looking at image of myself. this flu really is all-pervasive. just be grateful I didn't try to depict the caked and dried nostril hairs, among the worst of flu symptoms in my book. I should go to bed.
