Hi,

I was surprised the other day that our bookstore had Lee Hammond's books on the shelves (a very rare thing I tell you). Before I go out burn some cash which is unfortunately, very limited, I want to hear everyone's opinions first. I want to ask things like:

(1) Does she only focus on teaching you to draw with a copy (This is a way no-no for me)?

(2) Does she cover shading (modeling) in a considerable depth in her drawings? Cause I'm having a problem with that.

(3) I heard that she's best in portraits (I read that she draws from people's description to identify a suspect!) and yet there are people who says that her drawings are not too convincing. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Basically what I'm saying is that I would like to ask you guys any comments about her teaching style before I go buying any of her books. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

All of the reviews at Amazon.com are positive, but you will be wasting your money if you already are putting up roadblocks ("Does she only focus on teaching you to draw with a copy? This is a way no-no for me"). You can't put knowledge into a closed mind...

You don't have to make a technique a lifetime commitment to learn from it. If you follow the book as presented, and learn from it, you can then discard those techniques that don't work for you. Although you may not care for copies, or using grids, do it anyway for the learning experience. You may be surprised at the improvement you will see in other areas.
