spooge : yeah I also read that Remington was really into the impressionists by the nineties. Good thing he experimented with darkness, when the initial batch had mostly ran away from anything darkish in their effort. his " nights" look solid, even if I'm pretty sure my reproductions are eating 75 percent of the values in the darks. about them impressionist blokes, I once went to Giverny, it was revealing to see that Monet had such a collection of Ukyo-e prints, Kunyoshi, Hiroshige, etc... in every room there must have been one or two, at least.
Whistler - what book have you got ? I still got to find decent repro of his stuff. The one i have make some of his pieces look really bad, but even trough that, some happen to hit the mark. never saw him in flesh ( in paint, i mean.)
from Winslow Homer, he's everything but spectacular by today's standart, but i like it.

visual myriad - really appreciate the time you spent doing this. Will the same method work with a panda? I think I speak for everyone when I say, more tutorials!

When painting from reference, I think I find it easier to create/model a 3d head if I just start painting and don't start with a drawing. If I have a drawing first then I just colour it in! But with paint from the start it's all about, like, 3d n' crap and stuff an', an' junk.

It's late. Embarassed

spooge - Yeah, I had a copy of "The Wind in the Willows" with Rackham illustrations when I was a kid. I've been a fan ever since. Him and Michael Hague, I always liked both of those guys, although they don't seem to be very popular any more.
