I think all the points that arose here are pretty sound in reasoning. Indeed design does affect so many peoples lives and it's often commercial. But until recently, design was never really anything more than commercial. With the spawn of the internet has come personal projects and the such. (i.e. it's a whole lot easier to design a personal page than get a personal design book to press.)
However, painting, to me will always be the higher art form. At least academic painting will be. Think about this though, design has been seeping into the art museums for the past 50 or 60 years. What do you think those Warhols and Lichtenstiens were? And the "art" with the geometric series? Design stuff is slowly seeping into painting and it's making something called art. I think painting will always be better with the emotion attached to it, but design shouldn't be shuned for what it is -- a powerful and effective way to communicate. |

I never thought I'd have to write one of those 'apologetic' posts.. but here goes
Wow, i never thought that that one word could offend so many people Now i know how it feels like to be understood at this forum.. criminy.
Anyway, I should have used a different word. I meant 'elitist' to be a good thing, coming from the word 'elite', which for me means extra-special great artist Anyway.. the 'ist' more or less after 'elite' seemed like a good idea at the time.
Lumental is an awesome place, and I go there often because I know there's going to be some kick-ass art posted. I never meant to be sarcastic about the whole thing, because I'm not.
So I'm sorry if I offended anyone.. I miscommunicated and i should've read over what I typed, especially when it came to this sensitive topic.
Roundeye:
Frost: Gah.. yeah. I'm sorry, really I am.
Just leave this Lumental thing alone, it's really not worth arguing anymore.

Hey, I said I'm a fan of design. Leave me alone. *takes another drag off the crack pipe*
cheney- I didn't know you were including architecture in design. I was under the impression you meant 2D graphic design in general.
I think most people still think of Picasso as a painter.
Escher is generally described as an artist, but not specific to design.
But anyway, I'm not even taking sides. I'll say once agin, I'M A FAN OF DESIGN.
Now, pass me the crack pipe, bitch. |
