Hello!

I've been a part of our church's mega Easter Play. This is not your ordinary play. There were over 500 people in the cast and we put on 9 shows! The costuming was super! There was pyro, angels and demons fighting scenes, fireworks, and incredible singing.

I helped with the set painting and design. This was incredible! It was a entire new art thought for me. Having only worked on board and computer I felt totally out of my realm. I worked with the designer and learned so much. Everything was big and didn't have to be detailed because the audience couldn't see it anyways. Styrofoam bricks, moving scrims, huge drops, cardboard palm trees and then everything had to be washed for a blending effect. Versa foam was used for the tomb which I used my big spray gun to paint the sand color and shadows. It was hard to get used to thinking big. By the time we were done you really felt like you were back in time.

I also got to work with makeup. We airbrushed some of the actors bodies. Like Satan...he had horns and spikes coming out of his body and was almost complete latex. The outcome was spooky. And Jesus had to have whip slashes and fake blood. Michael the arch angel had white contacts and Satan wore red.

I made a web site so that people in the cast can down load pics and I wanted to share it with you guys.
Enjoy!
The Thorn

I like the sets a lot, especially the old buildings and the organic landscapes. Very good attention to details. It must have been a blast for you to participate in such an experience! I have also painted a scenary on a short play of my own, it's based on a Rene Margarat painting of a murder, we had two days and very limited choice for paints. Needless to day it totally blows.

I also can't believe how much budget your church has for putting up such a big show.. how did they do it?

The angels' poses are damn cool. The devil is freakin' awesome too. Looks like the production team has been exposed to cool fantasy/sci-fi/anime/manga stuff, eh?

I'm glad you guys liked those pics.

This is the fifth year this play has been done. New Life Church has many dedicated, hard working people. Everyone wants to help out and be a part of the Thorn, so they donate their time or funds. The wood and supplies were donated by company owners, the latex dude from Hollywood asked for artsy people to bring their airbrushes and help out, and the set designer is the mother of the play director. I myself spent over 50 hours helping out. The information I learned I most likely would have to have paid for as schooling.

The tickets each cost $8 and every show was sold out. The proceeds go into the youth groups and interns since they started this production. The interns are people (ages 20-25) that train to be missionaries. Not your typical missionaries, These guys have serious physical training along with what to do if someone puts a gun to your head. They just returned from a trip to Afghanistan.

The hell scene for the play is pretty scary. There were demons coming down from the ceiling and tormented souls screaming. The devil roars and when the pyro goes off, you can feel it in the middle rows. I sat up front waiting for my next crowd scene and was able to see the audience. Their reactions were awesome. There is this part where they tie a tormented soul to the rope and swing them out over the audience. Everyone would scream!

The whipping and crucifixion scene were the hardest to endure. If we were able to turn off the sound you would here weeping across the auditorium. But the resurrection makes it worth it, with fireworks, confetti and worship. Truly incredible!

A funny thing happened one night after a play. We all wanted to go out to eat, in costume to get people interested in the Thorn. Well, Satan ended up driving and Jesus was riding shot gun. You should have seen people on the roads, almost caused accidents. Then when we were leaving, Satan was already in his car and Jesus goes running after him, Wait for me!
