I promised Shizo I'd take some China pics, so here they are.
I basically just snapped whatever I thought was kind of interesting when i went out. No Mr. Photo-journalist deep social commentary stuff here.
Arnold did an ad for a consumer electronic brand. Wonder how much they paid him.
In many resturants, you can choose your own dead food. Pick the best looking corpse and they'll cook it for you.
Most people can only afford bicycles and mopeds, so they are EVERYWHERE.
Man-powered three-wheeler taxi. Costs about $.40~$.80 for a 5~10 minute ride. You can talk them down, but it's kinda pointless since it's so cheap already. The starting price for a cab-ride is $.70. For a 15 minute ride you'll end up paying $1.25. Yeah, it's ridiculously cheap, but remember, the average retail employee only make about $80~$100 a month, while upper management in a company only make about $125 to $350 a month. Tina, being the owner of 2 businesses, makes about $3,500 a month. Compared to the rest of the population in Fuzhou, she is considered damn rich. Of course, there are big corporation owners that make up to 6 digits too. Guess capitalism is taking over Red China, eh?
The cheap way to move things. During faster speeds, the person just put one knee on the cart and kick off with the other leg, maintaining balance.
They have this corny green spotlight shinning on the trees all over the entire country. I see them in Beijing, Shanghai, SenZhen, and every other major city. Man, it's like painting stripes on zebras to me. They are EVERYWHERE you look too.
Hehe. A flyer for a manga class on the front gate of a middle school. Cool, eh?
They have ancient trees here in Fuzhou, and the government wanted to protect them. So, even in the middle of the traffic, you can see a tree protected. I wish they could be as protective of human rights. . .. |

The big M is taking over the world! They sell their own Chinese versions of the de facto standard menu items too.
Here's a quick economic/business lesson for you:
Question: what business is McDonnalds in?
Fast food franchise?
Wrong. Who knows the right answer?
Tina trying to compete with the scenery. Concrete/buildings vs. Tina. Guess who won?
Tina's cosmetic shop.
Recognize the photos on the top row?
Tina bossing employees around(actually, they love her. She's a like a big sister to them).
Okey. That's it for part 1. Part 2 should be coming soon. |

Wow! Lunatique, these are really great!
It looks totally different from how I expected. I figured it'd perhaps be more industrialised, but it looks really commercial, or was that just the district you were in? |

Why is the streetlight green and facing upwards? It's very unconventional but creepy, do you think the government is trying to scare people off? Or did they just play too much Quake2? |

I haven't gone back in helluva long time. Still too scared of the heat I tell ya.
From what I've seen, my hometown Nanning (in Guanxi province, not very far from Fujian) isn't as modernised as many northern cities like Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai etc.
Lunatique, have you ever been to QingDao? I heard there's a whole bunch of western architecture there because it was once used as a holiday getaway for europeans. funky |

[Shizo]- Tina always look good. I'd LOVE to see Russia pics.
Arc][Pello- coming.
Rat- as far as I've asked, no one has hit them yet.
ceenda- oh, there definitely are some really backwards sections in the city. We're talking dirty, narrow, unlit, dark alleys with super old wooden houses that creak and shake. I'll take some pics of that when I come across them. Fuzhou has become a lot more commercialized in the past 3~5 years. It used to look very different.
Ahcri- Dude, those lights are so lame. People in China are known for having bad taste when it comes to design and cool stuff.
Rat- more pics are coming.
Novacaptain- Yep. We read the same book.
turnip- I've stopped taking trips here. All the cities look the same. No individuality at all. I'd rather go see Yellow Mountain or Tibet.
MoleculeMan- The whole McDonalds thing:
It APPEARS that they are in the business of fast food franchise, but in reality, the real money is made in real-estate. The big M owns some of the BEST and most EXPENSIVE real-estate in the world. That, is far more valuable than the hamburgers they sell.

Chinese people has developed some of the ugliest fonts and frequently uses them in posters of TV shows. I especially dislike the font used in the comic academy poster. I remember that I had to learn to write like that in a summer during my high school because it was so popular at that time. So I agree with you on that a lot of Chinese people are not very good at design: Whenever THAT font shows up on a poster, it automatically fails. |

Cool photos!
Guess what I can see across the road from where I live (in good old Austin, Texas)? A bright green spotlight shining up at a tree! Whee! (Well at least it's not on in the daytime.) |

Cool thread Lunatique. It is like one of those National Geographic articles. It would be interesting to see everyone do a 'Where I live' photo expose or something.
There is someone down my street who lights up part of their tree with a green light. Also an apartment building that uses flood lights of blue, red (looks pink actually) and green on various trees at night. |
