Just got done with a three week workbender. For some reason I can never sleep when one of those ends, even though I'm exhausted, so I'm doodling till I calm down.
So much inspiration comes off of these boards, I want to participate more. Hopefully I'll have time now...

Real quick one today. I'm in a hurry. I didn't get the light as I wanted it to be and I feel that the colours are wrong on the bright side of things. But I don't know why. There always is that blockade at a certain stage that doesn't let me see what's going wrong. I feel I'm doing the same mistakes again and again. Ah, whatever... :)
Word!
Mitsui:Nice one!
Ultrahsu: Those skintones look so strange but right. Great work!
Heysoos: Nice, The colours work really well.
Shagmunkey: Funky! :) _________________ http://www.stephanart.com |

Not much of a speedpainting I guess, more like a speed drawing.
I was watching Matrix revolution last night and started to wonder what it would be like if they really released all the humans from the matrix. Maybe not the best idea.
If that pic offends anybody, let me know and I'll take it down.
Again, great job everyone.

Somebody posted a spooky forest photo over at SA and I thought it was begging for some aliens, so . . .
Not strictly speedpainting I guess . . . more like a speedhoax.

zhuzhu - It's good to see that you're now trying to work without photo references. Although all that practice working from photos helped with some things, what they don't help is the ability to understand anatomy structure and how to convey emotions. You can work from photos for an eternity and still not get it unless you actually sit down and study how the human body is put together, and study how the weight is shifted as we stand a certain way, sit a certain way..etc. The human body is great at expressing emotions--you can see what someone is feeling without ever seeing the face--just the body language alone can convey so much. All these things have to be studied intensively by working from life, posing in front of the mirror yourself, and asking others to "act" out certain poses and emotions for you.
One thing that I've found to help a lot is to draw instead of paint. Just concentrate on gestures--don't worry about values, colors, rendering..etc. Just draw all kinds of poses and try to convey as many emotions as you can just by sketching. Do it from life, from your imagination, or take photos yourself (or use one of those "pose library" photo books). Get the shifting of the shoulders right, the tilting of the hips, when and why people shrug one shoulder up, what natually happens to the rest of your body when you put one hand on your hips..etc. Drilling yourself like that will make a night and day difference when you try to work out of your head. It'll get rid of that "stiff" look that people who are used to working from photos tend to have when they draw/paint.
It took me many years of working in comic books to just get my figure drawing to a decent level. I filled sketchbook after sketchbook for many years--and you know what? I'm still sorely lacking in that area despite all the hardwork I've put into it early on. Now that I've grown further and further away from art, I'm rustier than ever now. I might never do art again the way I used to, but I have no regrets as I love doing other creative things even more.
Look at Spooge and how vigilant he is at studying the human figure. That is one department we can never bee good enough at, because the figure is such an incredibly complex thing to master. |

Hello, new around here. This thread = great inspiration. Like the strokes of flushgarden, the textures of spooge, the skin tones of ultrashu, the hardcore thing and many artists around here.
stop talking, start posting. Some characters.
