This took quite a while to do... Have a whole new respect for Martin Handford, the "Where's Waldo" guy. This for a 2nd grade school book... It's about sounds in the neighborhood.

great illustration for the kids! lovely painting style. And all those small details! i'm sure i would have loved this as a child =)
just a question: i'm not sure about the perspective, as it seems to be a bit off. the problem is: do you think a proper perspective is important for small childs? or do they just ignore it? or would it be better to show them only perfectly constructed things, so they don't even learn from these "wrong" paintings?
uhm, anyway, i think there is no "right" or "wrong", just a different way of approaching to child illustrations. |

Tronbot... No, I don't think a proper perspective is important for anyone. I warp it more or less on purpose. By that I mean I pretty much go with the way it seems to lay out. In this picture I used only guide lines for 1 point perspective - vertical lines that widened slightly as they moved from bottom to top. For most things man-made or with a center of gravity (exception, the leaning tower of pizza), that perspective can be relied upon as a constant in any scene - so that's the one, and only one, I generally use for this style. You are right - there is no "right" or "wrong" and there are no rules to creating artworks.
Thanks Capt... This picture took a full day to layout and another 4 or 5 to add the color. It took a lot longer than I thought it was going to take. Fortunately the client is paying top dollar and they love it.
Sumaleth... Thanks _________________ HonePie.com

oo! one thing i'd suggest... put some people in those buildings? it is about sounds outside, but maybe you could say put a woman shaking out her laundry (seems to be a common thing).. maybe some ol' fat guy watching TV.. or yourself drawing the sounds even?
also, i don't see any birdies those things can be louder than anything else at certain times of the year... but of course this isn't my drawing nice goin' tho.. ur stuff makes me want to aspire towards kids' books someday
