1st: Damn! Just a mouse! (think about buying a wacom, take care of your eyes, and save time too Smile )

2nd: Maybe if you post the refence too, it could be possible to be more specific about critics (like lighting)....

But anyway, I'm shameless Razz . Here we go:

The left side of the face looks a little plain; maybe some hard contrast there could help (like the one on the neck). And the left eye is bigger.
There's something going on with the nose (left side again) it seems non symetrical,... maybe is just me.
Im sure the original poster has the same kind of lighting, but noticing the little amount of red in the pic... I dunno... maybe add some in the top left? (suttle as you do on the rest of the left side).

uffff... enought talking... Smile

i think the face in shadow could be darker... also, there should be some shadow below the eyelids on top of the eyeballs.. right now they kind of look flat right now. but otherwise, so far i like this one.. nice colors, interesting shapes in the face..

Hi again.

Looking at the poster now, I think you need more texture on the render (how about a soft custom brush?) for recreate the dirtiness on the face. Cause you use a mouse I know is gonna be pain in the ass do the hair (maybe paths on PhotoShop it could be a easy solution? Wink )

About the eyes, to me is gonna help you doing that dark border around the eyes; and make it with more contrast... Is gonna help on mere places too Wink

Im agree with aphelionart; it needs to be darker. Smile

Anyway excellent work! Very Happy

All the critique is good I guess, but the thing that really impresses me is, you got this much out of a MOUSE!!!

hey dhood.

I made a quick grid with things that can be good to look for, I know I do this but not in practise but more mentally if I work from life and or reference.
If you work from life this kind of grid can be really good to do, u see where u can draw straight lines and in figure drawing it helps u to work faster. Like if you looked at the model u would imagine a line going from the shoulder and perhaps down to the knee, this imaginative line helps u too spot errors early.

Like in yours gollum pic here I could see that the nose is not aligned like in the ref and the eyes is out of alignment but so are the eyes even in the reference, I guess those 3d dudes misses those kind of things sometimes.
The back of his head is bigger in the ref and his forehead is more leaning.

I am not that strict with following ref if I use it but from what I heard here from you u wanted to know where the errors were so hence why I am adding it in the post here.
I hope this helps you out and it is just a quick grid setup and not perfect in any way, let me know if you need more help.
As I see it the nose is the biggest problem.

have a nice day. Smile

Matthew, yea I see what you mean with the nose. Im going to have to fix that. I fixed some porportions and added a little more detail. I also chopped half his ear off to get it closer to actual size. I also made it a little darker, if you can even tell.
R.A.F. The hairs going to be a a pain to make, but I figure its just like any other detail, so Ill probably figure it out.
Stacy, yea my damn mouse. Whenever I upload something thats poorly done, thats my excuse. "It looks bad because I used a mouse" heh.
Dont really have the cash to get a wacom right now, so Im going to have to stick with the mouse.
Thanks for the critiques guys.
update-gave him an entire facelift.
dont mind the weird blue lines on his head and right ear. Thats just to mark where his hair will go.
