Thanks XIA! It's encouraging to hear that from you. I really like your gestures. My gestures have way too many marks and usually aren't very balanced. I don't think I'll get a chance to work from a life drawing class until next Spring. Sad

I guess I gotta find other things to draw then?

Anyway, more drawings:

Since my final drawings were way too huge to take digital pictures of, the quality isn't too great so I'll just provide links instead of directly posting:

Charcoal

Blue Color Pencil

Orange Color Pencil

Please imagine the blue and orange color pencil drawings to actually be in their respective colors, and both on a giant sheet of paper (almost as tall as me). The digital pictures were so bad that I couldn't get the colors to stand out at all, so I just greyscaled them.

Just finsihed switching my system to linux... it took forever figuring out how to scan and edit images again! I have to say that this is my favorite themed thread. I just finished up a life drawing class, and though I'd contribute some. Smile

YeeWu, dont know what you're doing? could have fooled me. Your drawings are very nice, strong outlines, good shapes. I would look very carefully at the lights and darks when you are blocking in your halftones. Usually planes in a form that face the same amount towards or away from the light have a consistent halftone value. look for these planes and try to unify the tones you use on them. Sounds simple I know, but it is difficult to do. tone is a difficult thing, still struggling with it myself.

wish I had more like that. as soon as I get back to school; lifedrawing slow this summer and daily is much nicer than weekly - i find you tend to feel more like experimenting.

deepsea37: Wow, thanks for the advice! I had heard before about drawing/painting with planes, but I had never really understood what that meant. I still don't Razz

But I never really thought about something so common sense as what you just said (with planes facing the same amount towards/away a light having a consistent halfton value). I'll work on better understanding drawing with planes more!

Pringle: I really like the crispness of your watercolor outlines.

XIA: Nice gestures! Ah, coffee shop drawing. I did that once I think, and failed miserably. I'll have to try again sometime soon Smile

thanks Xia... I like how you're challenging yourself, trying different things in that last bunch. Some great moments with the broad graphite sketches.

my latest gouache struggle. I lost. Still laying it down thin all the time. I think my goal should be to mix 5 or less colors/values lay those down heavy rather than the tentative buildup. It certainly would be the opposite of what I'm doing now... hopefully I'll learn something. my other challenge should be to stop avoiding backgrounds!

Anyone with advice on how to work with gouache would be much appreciated!

Varnum, I have a few thoughts on watercolor/gouache, but you probably know all this already so sorry if you do. Gouache is watercolor with calcium carbonate in it to make it opaque. So if you are using it transparently, go ahead and use WC. You can see that the colors are a little chalky. But you can get away with it cause your drawing is so good!

Maybe acrylic? You can look at it as combining the best of WC, gouache and oil. Or, it combines the worst. I like to jump around cause it makes me stay awake.

not sure if these are worth scanning, but I am dodging work tonight.

wow craig! i love the brushwork in your traditional stuff.. i wish you'd do/show more. it seems like you've got some photoshop influence showing, with all the textures. very inspirational stuff, as always Smile

finally got time to take pictures of my drawing,
i drew these drawing in company's lifedrawing class, 2-7 mins pose.
beat, i tried to mimic your line,
but it's hard to make perfect lines in that short period of time,
i kept erasing, trying to get the "right line",
man ,could u tell me any tricks of how to do that?
do u draw those sillouette just one time without correcting afterwards?

spooge: just a friendly remind,
u must use alot turpentine in ur oil,
i know u want those nice texture feeling,
but turpentine is not good for stability of the surface
and will also affect the shelf life of your painting,
i dont know if u know it or not.

no, I don't use erasers at all - I use this time of drawing as an antidote to computer , a kind of " no-undo " approach. it's just my pleasure for the moment, not a method to get better on the long term.
my only advice would be to look more before you start drawing - from what you said, all the time out of your few minutes you're spending erasing, thinking " that line is off, crap " you're looking at the paper, and not at the model. Observe, draw, move on. assume the line - the best record of your effort - later on, you'll see the quality/ the failure because the record is pretty bare. no hiding. This often leads to gigantic wrongness, but it's part of the game.
Varnum, Xia are often doing just this, guessing from their works...
