i did this in photoshop and all with the mouse. i'm not sure if i'm finished, even though i put the first rendition of this in the finished gallery. right now i've been working on it for an hour and a half. C&C are greatly appricialted.

alright, i'm gonna put this second one up just to see what you think. the only difference is the lens flare filters.

This is pretty good, minding that you were using a mouse!

I know how hard it is to finish something with a mouse myself.
(if you had a pen tablet things would work out WAY better)

But there is still plenty of things that you can do using "only" a mouse.

You can use the selection tool and make the character stand out more from
the bakground. Playing with colours and the likes... (saturation/contrast).

You can use opacity on the paintbrush/airbrush in photoshop and use (shift + left muse click x 2) to shape better edges on the character.

Take your time to learn the basics of drawing/painting.
Experiment alot.

It's true that you can learn alot by only using a mouse.
But my strongest tip for you is to keep drawing on paper and paint on canvas until the day you can buy a pen tablet for your computer.

I made textures for quake mods for 3 years before I even concidered to buy a pen tablet. Today I know that I would have learned things much faster if I had a pen tablet from the start.

I made this little overpaint with only a mouse

NOTE: gif animation. Might have some loading time. Wait until it shows up.

edit: Don't use lens flares! Wink

cheers

Well there are a lot of really good free paint programs you can use until you get a new version of photoshop, like GIMP and OpenCanvas.

Instead of just ripping on the use of filters, I thought I would throw out the reason I dislike the second attempt. My freaking eyes!!! The brightness is just killing me, with the migrains and everything. Dark red background with the bright whiteness is killing me. Also, they are adding nothing to the scene. I am not sure if you were trying for a bright light directly behind the character, but the three points don't properly portrey that. I have seen some people do some very amazing things with only a mouse, so keep at it. It will be much harder, but your skills will only be that much better when you do pick up a tablet.

To improve on this, if you chose to, I would suggest spending more time and working with some different size brushes. Right now the body looks pretty good, but working further into it will definately help.
