zhuzhu thanks for the kind advice! I believe that part about starting from the dark to light will help me a lot. [I did it the opposite way] I will start doing that on my next set of paintings. Do you have any personal comments on my works so far? |
starting from the dark to light maybe is a good way.but i'd like starting from the light or basic better.it is easy to make sure how the shadows darker.cause the white canvas is not good way to compare the light and dark.

Freebooter, getting better, keep going!
Uh, tried to start from dark to light and then add the darkest darks. I have no clue.

Illya,
Great effort there. Have another go.
Think about these points though.
- In general people's eyes are in the middle of the head. The distance from the eyes to the chin is equal to the distance from the eyes to the top of the head. It's really really easy to make that error. In fact I assume I have made the mistake and check my drawing every time.
- Since you're drawing from a reference force yourself to see the forms in the image. I like to use a thin brush to create the sketch. The lines follow the form of the face. This forces you to see the 3D in the face. Find the planes and strike the lines at one angle - then find another plane and run the lines along that plane. Use this as the starting point and you can smooth them out once to see the form.
- Think of light and shadow. There is shadow in the light, and light in the shadow. And a good tip is that the darkness part of the light is lighter than the lightest part of the dark.
- There is light bouncing around under the skin of a person. Skin is translucent - otherwise it looks like a cadaver or a wax work. zhuzhu has this down great - look at his wierd kids their skin have an amazing glow to them even as there is the most minimal of texture.
- Focus on the eyes, think of the eyes as something like an OS X Aqua button. There is depth and reflection deep within the eye. The darkest part of the eye also invariably has the brightest highlight in the whole portrait - the spark of life on the pupil.
I'm no expert (my effort a couple of pages ago could have used some of my own advice) -But these points are ones I try to keep in mind as I attempt to create sketches worthy of posting here.
Lastly - think about this: -
You don't draw what you see - you draw so you can see what is really there.
I'll try to post something useful myself soon. Great to see everyone else's work - fantastic. |

eyewoo, thanks for asking. the name of the brush is "Rough Round Bristle" and yea it is crazy that I have missed it earlier. U might wanna paint big with it cause that gives more texture.
here's a pic with the brush marked:
keep up the good work everyone |

Matthew: Can you tell me what opacity you use when painting? And what can I do to improve the look of my paintings. Do I need to clean things up? Practice more with light and shadow? Etc.

Just had to check in and see what was going on.
-inferus- welcome to the forum. really dig the duoble gunturret tank design. i think the picture would benefit a lot from greater contrast though. it looks sort of washed out. Are the tanks from ref or did you make it up?
Rorsh- nice one. reminds me of a video with a music group named aha, for somereason. and i mean that in a good way.
zhalimuto- glad you liked the lighting. You got some really sweet colors in that last one. Great stuff.
Octavian- Arrr maiteeessss!!!!! This chair be high, says i- _________________ ARRR! |

Hi all,
Its been ages since I posted here, even had to re-activate my account. Shame on me:-/
Greatly inspired by all of you I decided to try my luck in the "speed painting circuit". The founder of this should get a guaranteed spot in the illustrators heaven.
My good friend Capt Flushgarden dared me to use stronger colors, I tend to be very moderate in my range of colors. Hopefully I have been more brave this time
made a self-portrait.
Cheers
/Tommie

mondays...
thanks for the comments, fellas
Matthew - prison dude is nice. Nurse ratchett would be too if you spend a little more time drawing the face, or just make the bold strokes better shapes.
drunken_muse - I like more central subject matters too, I just get frustrated if I can't get it to a decent place, and an hour is just not enough time to do a figure and a landscape nice... maybe I should spend more time on them...or just start doing them I guess.
Stewart one - nice one, i really like the colors and strokes.
EssenmitSosse - baby unicorn is hella cute.
skullmonkeys - nice. if you want to fix anything I'd go back and add a little atmospheric perspective and make the trees in the background not have black in the shadows and fade to bluer and lighter... fade in planes.
A.pipe - cool suits, even doggie's got a suit. you kinda squish the area between the nipples to the pelvis a little, more so between the belly botton n the pelvis... it needs a little more space, just a quick observation on your proportions.
allpetter - nice basket!
octavian - yaarrrrgh, my shirt is so red, yaaarrrrrgh. nice hook.
Started out just wanting to paint some clouds... but then I wanted to paint a face. # 9.
