NeFF: Nice one. That strong orange works well I think.
Zhuzhu: I like your version of Broms Helexa. The general impression comes very close to the original. The tubes on the back could be a bit more pronounced though, to make it look a bit more balanced.
Matthew: With this one I tried what you said. But it will take me much more practice. Do you pick for every stroke a new color? I always use one color for a lot of strokes (where ever I thing that color should/could be in the pic). I get only rough shapes with a few strokes. I took it a bit further anyway (very ugly and dumb pic actually, but thats not the point).

always credit your sources...
thanks for the comments.
skullmonkeys - ah, yes, listen to what spooge is preaching, amen to that. I always paint from dark to light, then add shadows. Its not the only way but saves a lot of time. It gives you the most natural look. Its almost like slowly turning on the light in the room. Control your values and save it for where you want the eye to focus. Hard to explain colors, just remember, warm light cool shadows, cool light warm shadows, there are of course exceptions as in extreme conditions like fire scenes. The degree of saturation and contrast in the difference of these temperatures is up to your preference. I'd say rent miyazaki's movie's like spirited away and take screenshots and compare that to pixar's more extreme sweet colors. Or look at Bouguerau or Waterhouse or anyone like that. But color really is secondary to values, if you have good values you can almost put any color there... hopefully not ugly ones... and yeah, move up and down the color wheel when changing values, however slight. Like a red apple will have yellowish white highlight, and the area around it will be reddish orangy instead of just pink (white added to red), and if you want to get fancy, add cooler greys to contrast that color.... hope this helps, I can't really explain. Just keep painting
drunken_muse - well, i shouldn't say jack his style, but more subject matter, more open convincing spaces instead of intimate vignettes like the ones I've been doing. Thanks for the link on those brushes, I didn't dl them cuz the site was kinda sketch, cookie heaven. how's sweden this time of year?
A.pipe - I like the second bot, the laser streak might make more sense if it came from the left instead of the right, since he looks like he's turning to face the right of canvas? I'm being picky cuz its late and I haven't gotten much sleep, heh.
Matthew - ah yes, I know the brush you speak of, nice of it. nice colors on the fuzzy one.
Spooge - man that's nice. great brushstrokes and colors, and the torso can twist that way I think...
Capt.FlushGarden - nice still life. loose n convincing.
pierre - nice.
Mitsui - nice, should take care of the oink, oink :p
night time for me...
Creepy girl, # 8
inspired by a pic of a horus sculpture I took in egypt... love that little guy.
edited, double posted by mistake... oh and skullmonkey, all my paintings took about an hour to an hour n a half. _________________ purE

thanks guys.
ultrahsu, I just love those creepy eyes, very nice your latest.
antx, yes much better and more simplified, I like the top one better. I am struggling a lot with this simplifying part myself so I am not sure if I can give u any good advice. U can pick the same color when adding just one stroke, for eg if you wanna change the background or paintover the arm pick the background color and paint. Don't be afraid to leave some strokes and if you have set to pen pressure some of it becomes transparent which sometimes saves the simplifying part.
U know that background could have been done in 3 strokes if you wanna simplify even further.
btw I am sorry for not getting back to you with the pm you was sending me, u might wanna know though that I work at res 1024x768 so the pics are big for me too. I like big pics. keep it up and keep experimenting.
here's a quick paintover, sorry I am still tired just woke up and it keeps raining here, think Sweden will turn into a rainforest very soon.

This picture's a little on the spammy side...it started out as a silly little pencil drawing (http://home.comcast.net/~yodel/No._7.5.jpg), then finished up like this (also silly and little, I guess.).

Not exactly a speedpainting, but not polished either.
Portrait of a fictional character, no reference used.
PS 7, about 3 hours.
I wanted to paint a proper background and all, but couldn't due a lack of skill. Or rather patience.
Matthew > You've getting a whole lot better. Keep it up.

pierre - awesome, looking forward to seeing your site pop into action
ultrashu - yeah, I know what you mean. I have a real problem with many things, breaking the frames of portraits opening up for larger surfaces is one of the bigger ones.. maybe I'm more of a designer than an illustrator on that point (like to keep content to one subject/empty scene). I've learned a lot from your recent paintings though, maybe because they're in a different style and have me looking at other things.
if anyone have suggestions on how for me to improve, I'm all ears.
shameless rip of all PS tricks and styles ever:
[EDIT: uploaded larger version and fixed something that was driving me insane.]
(but it was fun making)

Hey everyone. Lots of great stuff going on here as usual. Heres a Speedpaint i did today, about 1hr30min. Used ref for the mountains. Had to throw something in there to make it a little more interesting. The smoke from the ship turned out rather odd though..
(alt+p)
Ulhtrahsu- great picture you got a really freaky thing going on there with the eye. And good comment on colors and shadows. you really got the skintones down good. And the material on the statue looks very nice too,
Francis- Nice angry monster cat thing.
Rorsh-that second pic is real nice nice color choices.Somehting on the first picture throws it off alittle. think its the way youve distributed the brushstrokes.
zhalimuto- nice lighitng and mood. The only thing that bothers me is the area with the trees. Perhaps a little more contrast there would help?[img][/img][img][/img] _________________ ARRR! |

zhuzhu thanks for the kind advice! I believe that part about starting from the dark to light will help me a lot. [I did it the opposite way] I will start doing that on my next set of paintings. Do you have any personal comments on my works so far?
I like the latest one. The horus pot is umm so cute!
Pirre, WOW I love the feeling of the action and the contrast! awesome work! Can't wait to see the rest of them on your site. Were they for a film project?
here's my latest.
Evangelion should NOT be allowed to be made into a movie. |

Hey Spooge, Thanks for the words... What your saying is very, very helpful... I appreciate the fact that you take time out to help... I know I am speaking for everyone here when I say that your advice and critiques are helping us all. so thanks again.
I had already started to think about midtones a bit more when I finished this image, then I read Spooge's post and it really gave me SOMETHING to think about. Time to go read Sargent's words now....
Ultrashu: Your one of my fav's round here... thanks for your posts.
Lots of cheap tricks and errors in this image but anyway:

Matthew, you're progressing greatly. Awesome stuff. Zhuzhu, great colours. I'd try to post a lot of constructive criticism if I have the time. I'll try again the next time, if I don't get lynched. No reference used. Anyway, time to go on a scavenger hunt for FOOD!
Maybe not. |
