bagelguillotine - like that one.
Tedsuo - ha, yeah I'm alum, still there once in a while, take advantage of the workshops is all I gotta say. Its a shame a lot of kids are coming out of there with a lot good technical knowledge but weak art skills. Fine Arts show was pretty good this year.
Matthew - nice brush n colors on that hillscape, is that ps or ptr... not sure about the saturation on the seascape.
Combustion - I'm using photoshop for all these, except for fork girl, she's painter 7. I start with a smooth gradient n then try to build up textures along with the painting. crazy photo real copy/study u did there. combine that kind of patience with some bad ass brushstrokes and it'll be sick
stephan - cool animal head space ships.
drunken_muse - cool, what's eraserX brushes? I'm just messing around in here, I wish I'd have painted some of these in real life... I actually came on here to try to jack spooge's style but I can't do it, ha.
skullmonkey - thanks dude, just remember to change temperature n hue as u pick colors n its all good.
mine for the day. I started with a drawing this time since we're all sharpening on drawing. even tho I wanted to paint another creepy girl, I forced myself to paint an old dude... its called don't touch my lobster.
have a great weekend y'all.

ultrashu - you wouldn't be the first to try it, but I dunno what you'd want with his style when you got such a nice one of your own... ah, who am I kidding, of course I understand - It's what we're all here for! On the other note, EraserX is an artist, and the brushes (for PS7) can be found linked on this page: http://www.pensnpixels.com/tutorials/flatting.htm (atleast I think those are the ones) |

Quickie in pchat, trying out colours. I just noticed the groundperspective and shadow might be a tad off. Ah well.

Hmm skullbot was a hit! Thank you for the happy thoughts.
Octavian, I would suggest starting from a middle value and working your way from there. Wait until you really need to use lights or darks. If your middles are well thought out, you don't often need them. Read the sargent notes on my site again. He talks about "classifying" values. Each plane has it own value, and has to be kept in relation to other planes. Keep in mind when things are going wrong, and you feel tempted to pull out the white and black, that there is only one darkest dark and only one brightest light. Find those, as well as the middle and now you have three points from which to start classifying the values of the planes. When you are looking at the model, it is easier to see the differences. But when you are painting out of your head, you have to understand why each of those planes might have a different value. Then you can construct some kind of rationale for breaking things up. But keep in mind, try to say the most with the middle values, hold back on the extremes.
But the biggest problem I see is too much activity or contrast in shadows. It's dark in there! Not much going on. Color and detail live in the halftones, or what is in light but not the brightest area. So relatively speaking, keep shadow information subordinate to what is in light.
I think these two things will help with "unity"
(Also learn value on basic forms, point sources versus diffuse or ambient, etc.)
Combustion, yes loosen up, it will help a lot.
A pipe, glad you like my pencil! Hehehehe someone liked my drawereing!
Matthew, yes it takes a lot of time and mileage. It takes less time and mileage if you take Isric's sound advice. Like I said before, you are doing things in kind of a backwards way, but the positive is you might end up in a different place than the more "correctly" trained artist, but the risk is that you will not improve as quickly or go as far. But you are progressing, so go ahead.
As far as doing both, that fine too, but there is only so much time in the day and you will not live forever. So spending time on what you think will be the most good is a smart idea.
Mermaid sketch for a contest that I cannot win. Never did develop it. Her midsection/ppelvis is hideous( cant turn your stomach down with your legs bound together, I just realized) but out of time. It will stay hideous. See this is what Isric is talking about, I should spend a few evening figuring it out! That would be good for me.

I decided to swallow my pride and go reference hunting.
Mikko K briefly taught me sumfink about picking colours with HSB-sliders and some other vague stuff I didn't care to listen
So, this is officially my first picture based on a real person.
Liutenant Boyd (Guy Pearce) from Ravenous
His jaw is too bulky..
Zhuzhu > Sorry to say this but that's pretty cheap to rip-off from Brom's.
Flushy > Dang, that's pretty good. Even more when considering that you made it with handicapped Art-Rage.
Mikko K > You have shitload to teach me about valours and colours
theories.
Mitsui, cool.
Spooge.. gosh

Used a not so old painting to work from and tried to give it a more spontaneous look.

[Frustration post ahead, feel free to skip.]
Stuck in the middle of a 4 year degree in Illustration it seems. I can render something perfectly in oils (http://www.usol.com/~hofer/mand-final-composite-layers-color-correct1.jpg), but there is no feeling. I desire Industrial Design's sketching nature, but not the physical modeling of objects. Why isn't their a degree on Character deisng and Concept Creation? Mixing: Color theory, illustration, sketching, perspective, life drawing, and fine arts painting... This is the degree I want.
Oh, and when does style come, rather than this blandishly painted slop... 30min photoref
Is it my brush stroke, is not using enough brushes, is because it's photoreferance (I have no imagination at current. Never even knew what LoTR was untill the 1st trailer came out).
Sorry, just needed to vent. Frustrated. |

jHof, that oils piece is really amazing. The neck of the guitar is really eye-catching.
It does seem strange that those skills don't carry over into digital work... just apply all the same sorts of discipline for now is my advice. And make sure you're still just as empathetic about the form: your strokes should show that in your sketch there. Right now, it's all sort of blobbish... not that I'm the best person to be giving tips on digital painting. See what other people say. |
