Painter and photoshop seem to be owning the market so much it's not even funny. Except for those we have:

ArtRage (clumsy and limited, but showing a great deal of promise)

Expression (vector based, just tried it thanks to balistic's speedy. nice to get rid of resolutions, but it's very technical and very much a microsoft product)

I hear some people are using Opencanvas, but I haven't tried it yet. Seems to be photoshop5 but with less features, could be wrong there... So... Is there any other painting software out there that's interesting in some way? Help out and post links if you got 'em!

I have tried out pixia and played around with it and I kind of liked it but the most of them are very limited in various ways, or maybe I am too used to photoshop.

I didn't like artrage that much and I am painting a lot with oils but I couldn't really see the resemblance with traditional media. Maybe the update with artrage could be something but that is still to be seen.

opencanvas is pretty smooth, its very limited but nice to work with, 1.1 is the version to get though, any higher and it loses the online session aspect, which makes the program, without it, it's weak, theres alias sketchbook, which i havent tried properly but looks reasonably limited too, looks like artrage as far as setup but with a lot more options and without the impasto, everything else has been covered up there that i know of, oh, dogwaffle is an ok ps replacement along the same lines as gimp, theres studioartist for the mac only, that has some interesting brush effects from what ive seen (on a pc so i havent tried it though), the paintchats are getting pretty good too, but, still not worth mentioning for anything other than sketching

spyro, if you want to have online sessions then i guess OC1 is what you would want. But saying that 1.1 is the one to get, thats where your wrong. OC 2 and 3 are very nice, might seem limited compared to more developed soft as painter and photoshop, but it is very much a great aplication. And no it isnt like photoshop 5. OC is specifically made for art, not for photo editing and such. It brush original painting brush is very nice and has a smooth watercolor type feeling. With the release of verion 3 you also get some nice new features and a very easy to use tone and pattern tool. Wich makes it real easy to tone digitally for those who do comics, etc.

OC is very good light on the wallet (70.90$ for the 3Plus version) , its cost is definite plus and it also has a very large international online comunity where people display their works and the even file, wich you can download and see the whole process of how their work was made.

The community is quite anime type driven, however, there are all kinds of work in there, form photo realistic to abstract.

Its a very nice alternative for all kinds of artists.

yep, thats more or less what i was saying, i have 2 and 3, but the online aspect is what makes the prog popular (eventfiles are interesting too, but they cover all versions so, get the one with the best stuff in imo), there are painchats that are just as functional as OC, which is why i'd say go for the one that allows sessions, mon has photoshop, so he's not looking for a cheaper alternative, and the online aspect is, the only draw away from progs like ps and painter, it's the little fun things that you can get outside the 2 progs that are interesting to play around with, like artrage

I use Corel Photopaint. You can only get it as part of the Draw bundle. I like it better than PS or Painter. It's a nice blend of both extremes.

Thanks for the input guys... What i'm really looking for is... well.. a program that makes painting easy... an oilpaint brush in photoshop would make me sooo happy, imagine ArtRage as a photoshop plugin! Everything in PS is so dry and clinical. Painter is good for that, but with a crappy interface (i don't like what they did in v.8, tho the intention was good)

What does Corel Photopaint do? Does it have smeary, muddy oilpaints?

Mon~ From reading balistic's constant praise of Corel Photopaint; I get the idea that it's got the technical aspects of Photoshop, but has a brush engine more similar to Painter (correct me if I'm wrong, balistic). If this is true, it sounds like a great program...

Yes Corel photopaint does have some really nice oilpaint and smeary brushes similar to those found in Painter.
I have Corel photopaint 11 which is the previous version and it would be great, but it does not work proper with my wacomtablet which is the old version.

Don't know how the tablet support is for the new wacom and in the new version 12.

But otherwise its a excellent program, it has more paint modes than Photoshop.

Then you also have Jasc Paintshop pro which is now a very excellent program, very nice shortcuts and quick edit of the brushes. Also a quite nice brush engine. It does not have oil type brushes though.

It's $179 and has some sort of gesture-based interface to call up the palettes you need. I haven't seen it in person.

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I've heard rumors about OC3 having multi-user session capabilities, only that you need to log onto their official site first in order to prevent piracy of their products.

Unless your production budget allows you to go to ILM and buy a custom coded Linux Paint Box... the three best paint programs available are:

2. Aura 2.5 (I got this with my VideoToaster and they've since been sold to another company [I've been told they've made it even better] you'll have to look them up on the net... I'm still using, and very happy with, 2.5)

Sorry for reviving a 2 year old post, but my wacom intuos doesn't work with my corel photo-paint x3 either.

There's no photopaint.ini file or photopnt.ini file (like in previous version).

I emailed corel but hey didn't respond.

Can anyone help me out?

That SUCKS. I was worried that Photopaint might turn to crap after Corel bought Painter and PSP.

It seems weird that they would remove that functionality though, since I doubt there's been a full re-write of the program since version 10.

I might try downloading the demo for X3. I'll let you know if I have any luck with it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I messed with the tablet configuration under tools options and after a few times the tablet seems to work, although erratically. But no pressure sensitivity.

Sometimes it works, sometimes the brush gets magically resized, and sometimes the cursor doesn't move at all. I doubt it's the tablet fault because there's nothing wrong when I'm using Corel Painter IX.5

I love Corel Photo-Paint but this is kinda sad.
