(apologies if you've already seen this at CGTalk. I get around.)

Full-comp:

Detail:

This was done for the same client as the Headless Horsedude from last week. Jose Saenz sketched the lines for the characters in pencil, and passed them off to me for painting. The chief art direction I was given was that it needed to be magical.

The boy's head was a challenge to light, as it's one of those compound cartoon shapes that shouldn't exist in real space.

Initially I was planning on going more monochromatic with the piece, like I did for the other poster, but it just didn't suit the mood of a Peter Pan theme. Cheese detector disabled, additive blend mode ahoy, set sail for magical . . .

I would cut off the black part on the bottom. This way you would have the horizon line on the 1/3 of the picture (it is considered the ideal place to place the horizon is on the 2/3 or on the 1/3 of the picture)

Other than that. This is damn goood! Wink

EDIT: hum, just realised the sea looks too flat. Try to add some athmospheric perspective (changing the tone/saturation/ilumination according to the athmosphere color and the distance)

I'll agree with garreta.

Two things: 1) Sky looks a little too dark (maybe this internet cafe monitor).
2) The trees look a bit out of place here--a little too Bob Ross in a Synj world.

That's pro work, though, for sure.

Thanks for the feedback. The black areas need to be there for the poster layout. There will eventually be a big logo at the top, and text at the bottom. I normally wouldn't work on such a black background, but it's something the client wanted.

Regarding the sea: in the references that I looked at, atmospheric perspective seemed very minimal by moonlight. You could see a full tonal range all the way to the horizon. I suppose this is because the light reflected from the moon is less intense than that from the sun, and doesn't illuminate the air so much. I initially tried using a bed of fog to conceal the horizon, but it somehow seemed less pretty . . . there's a feeling I had from being able to see all the way to the horizon that wasn't there when I tried to cover it up.

Very nice artwork, but i defenitively feel a problem with the sea, mainly with the part far away, the part closer seams ok. That was the only thing that really hit me as a problem. But i would add that i dislike the black at the bottom of the image, if its is sea, then maybe ligthen a part of it, and if it is land, maybe some scatered dark details would be good.

I dont agree about the trees looking out of place, i think they are wonderfull!!

Again nice work, only 2 minor problem from my point of view, and the rest is really great, i like it.

I really like it. Lots of nice details and the magic feeling is definetively there.
I like the sea, although I'd have made the horizon line a bit more blurred or without the clouds, having them there makes me feel the horizon line is too tight. Just a matter of taste though.
