I will be to first to admit, Lunatic's initial post kind of got me off on a rant -- my fault for not being smart enough to figure it out the message without the need of smilies.

My apologies around.

The posts regarding Macs not being "as upgradeable" was a wee bit off-base. Now, if the author said "some Macs aren't as upgradable as PCs", I wouldn't have batted an eye over it.

The sonny comment had no ill will taken -- that I got.

However Macs do not crash nearly as most people will believe, nor are they as slow or hard to fix (nor more or less than a PC I would wager). Believe it or not, Apple has made some great in-roads both on the software and hardware front since the last 5 years; how many people here (with the obvious exception of a select few) actually follow what Apple is doing? Most would probably are not. I don't believe the PC is better suited for graphics -- it's an impossibility that can't be founded (the same for the Mac). It's all about the person using the machine.

Anyway, that's all. Again, my apologies for going off on a rant.

I don't mean this to be inflammatory in any way. I just speak from experiences I've had. I've used both Mac and PC for almost as long as both have existed. 3 out of my 4 industry jobs I have used strictly Macintosh. By all rights I should be a Mac user.. wrong

Macs: "Hey I tried to 'select all', I guess that's too much for the program/OS and now suddenly without any error dialogue box, I'm back to my desktop wallpaper"
I also love how the new Mac OS requires you to run old programs in an emulated OS9... they might as well instruct you when you launch the program to hit yourself repeatedly in the eye with a meat tenderizer.. or just pretend that you have 5 megs of RAM.
Also, I don't know about the rest of you.. but my PC has like a million fonts on it and they don't impact the performance in anyway save the HD space they consume. On a mac however, you download or install the wrong font.. even if it worked on every other mac you've tried it on.. it's damn near as bad as a virus. You'd think a Graphic Artist's niche computer manufacturer would figure out the whole font dilemma after several failed OS attempts. Not really. Font Managers just tend to put the little potential roadblocks into nice organized rows... little else.
Though I will say one thing... the open window organizer with the hot-corners is sexy as hell.
There's all kinds of Freeware/Shareware (ACDSEE etc.) out there that is just bonzo on PC.. but on Mac.. it has to be EXTREMELY popular to get a Mac port and then it's typically bug laden or just a shadow of its PC counterpart.. or both.

I won't sit here and tell ya that PCs are perfect by any stretch.. they're so popular and there are so many different PC manufacturers and distributors that you're bound to get a Lemon if you don't pick a nice solid, reliable company. Nearly (99%) every problem though that I've had with a PC was the result of a virus (one good thing for Mac is there are so very few Mac viruses) or something that I messed up.. like a setting, etc.. but I've been able to fix them all myself.

Basically, I've used at least a dozen Macs professionally... OS7-OSX Panther. They've all been a collossal pain in my butt. I've personally owned 4 PCs... only 1 of them was a piece of crap but that's only because I bought from a crap company.

PC's are cheaper, more upgradeable, more reliable, more gameable & more softwareable. Even with all things being equal, why would you limit yourself with Mac? Why? It's all a matter of preference.

P.S. 90% of my friends are Mac users God bless 'em.

Hey all, not much I can add to this thread but my own experience. I have been a pc users for nearly ten years. I just switched over to mac (dual g5, blah blah) and spent a f*cking crap load of money. I have been fairly pleased with my experience with mac for the last year, however, I find myself wondering if I was duped by marketing and the myth that mac's are better graphics computers than pc's.

Fab: all I can say, is yay mac. it looks cool, osx is slick, its never crashed yet, Photoshop works great, but painter runs like crap compared to my pc and..... the case looks kinda cool too. If you don't care about money, buy a mac for its looks and stability? However, I'm glad I kept my pc because I will probably never buy a mac again and if I were you, I'd pay attention to the experience in here (flexible elf, S. Stahlberg, Spoogedemon, Lunatique, etc) these guys have been around for a while.

interesting... well, all i can say is thanks for you imput guys. i hope i haven't caused any bad blood around here.

anyway i'm kinda new at this computer thing , hence the thread pc or mac. i guess my next question would be which PC companies are good and how come?

I always liked Dell, but my current computer was custom made by a friend. If you know someone who's good at putting them together, check that out. It worked well for me.

Dell is very reliable, as they stand behind their stuff very well. At work I recently got a new a machine put together by ABS. ABS has great ratings from reputable sources. I was able to get on the phone with a rep and specifically build what I wanted. I wanted a Dell XPS, but I actually saved money going through ABS.

I've built my own machines for the past 10 years or so, and just recently, after my new hard drive failed and caused $2000 worth of damage to my other internal systems on my 6 month old PC, I decided that if I am using this professionally, then I'm going to need a good name with a warranty.

I went with Dell, and I couldn't be happier. The studio I am now at is outfitted with Dell machines as well(running both Photoshop and Painter).

With regards to Mac - I have been also a mac user since the day of the Macintosh SE...but never a mac owner.

I think my pockets were never deep enough.

Im a mac user predominantly, but ive also used PC's for graphics, no real difference for me, i prefer a mac cause ive used one since childhood. I really think its like a weapon, a computer is a computer, its the user that counts. But one thing I know, I dont like Steve Jobs, and I dont like Bill Gates, har, maybe someday ill use a PC mostly, but either way is fine by me, like to be open minded about stuff like this
