FENG BY CHN:

Don't waste your time with cheesy filters. Obviously you did not paint the whole city picture. Everything matches up directly if you overlay the images.

If you really want to learn, put the reference on the side of the bigger canvas and paint. Look at the reference but don't use the color picker. It might take an hour just to get one color but eventually you will start to pick up things and you will work faster.

Stephan:

When doing an artwork with a reference I make the reference picture very small; it's about 1.5 inches wide, I start at 72 dpi and fill in the basic colors and shapes. No details are painted here, but I spend time going back and forth with color. I try blue... no its a little aqua. So once I start to understand the colors everything is a lot easier. I change the image to 250 dpi and start refining it once I get the colors down.
Alt color select is very useful; somtimes I will mix colors on the fly by lightly pressing my pen which controls the opacity of the brush. Then I will alt select the color I just put down and paint that at 100% opacity by pushing harder. Most of the time I select colors by clicking the color wheel icon. Oh and if any knows of a better way to select colors please tell me. I can't stand having to click the little icon for the color wheel to open it. I wish it was always out.

Another thing I would say is don't erase at all unless it's a huge mistake, but even huge mistakes can be good. SO much time is wasted erasing and changing things. Leave it how it is and at the end if there is still a problem go over it with a brush. Also make sure to save your custom brushes into a set so you can use them whenever you need them. So far I have custom brushes for water, dirt, rocks, random lines, just about anything that can make me work faster. You probably saw my tutorial already but here is a custom brush tutorial I posted earlier.

http://www.deviantart.com/view/7791449/

my goal of doing speed paintings is for me to learn realistic values and colors. I've really learned lots about lighting, reflections, and radiosity. It seems that every time I do a speed painting I pick up some small detail that I didn't know before. Even though my speed paintings are mostly about learning color and value I try to pick a broad range of subjects to paint so I can learn design and memorize how things look. I was sketching the other day and saw that I could draw from memory any of the speed paintings I did.

I set a time limit for my speed paintings to force myself to think creatively how to get the painting done in the set time limit. By working like this I have learned to create custom brushes that help me paint textures fast and simple repetitive things like rocks and waves with ease. Of course custom brushes dont do all the work but they make life easier and give me more time to work on things that I dont yet understand.

I try to do at least one speed painting a day, all my design studies are done with pencils and pens. I carry a sketchbook everywhere and copy everything I see. So thats how I practice.

There has been much improvement in my paintings since I started speed painting with references. Check out all my speed paintings at www.chrismayernik.com . Take a look at the first speed paintings I did and the ones I have done recently. Thats how I know I am improving.

Ok I hope that answers your question.

Here is how I start my speed paintings. I usely just use a hard round brush for everything except the sky. I use a soft brush for the sky. This took about 15 minutes. Now that I got the basic colors down I am going to raise the DPI to 250 and start cleaning it up.

zhalimuto : I use only my custom brushes, and photoshops default hard and soft brush. I will be putting my brushes up for download in a few months. I'm trying to build a complete pack to help people with the simplest of things.

Oh and very nice artwork. I like the colors and look of it.

here is the finished painting. I didn't get much detail but I think I got most of the colors down and that was my goal.

Time it took : 1 hour 10 minutes.
Program used : photoshop 7
Full image size : 2700 x 1800

I believe that the point of the thread is to actually produce new work within a "speedy" amount of time. Not just to post old pieces from your portfolio. Maybe I'm wrong.

I should add: that wasn't meant to be taken offensively.

Sorry if I broke with tradition. I just felt that with Ray Charles in the news, no one one mind if I posted this old piece. My mistake. It won't happen again.

Here are some drawings and comps. These are all recent(this week except for the kimono one.) So what is the time limit for speedpaintings anyway? I intend to paint these drawings, I just hadn't gotten around to it. Since my judgement regarding a post was called into question, I just thought I would upload them as they are.

Hey Kimchi, this is not meant as an insult, but where is your work? Do you have a website? I can't find any threads with your images, only comments on other peoples work. I thought the rule was in order to comment on someones work (at least within speedpainting) you needed to post an image along with your comment.

Am I wrong in this?

Finally, something that isn't smothered in snow. Shocked

I learned quite a bit from not relying on the Alt click.

Don't know if you guys would agree but the image looks less 'grey' and flat than my previous attempts.

Great work people~

still having trouble with photoshop changing the value and color of my images slightly.... I'm really not happy about it. My pc never had this many color matching problems as my Mac does. any suggestions? once again, I'm using the adobe 1998 color profile... and before I save my image, I convert to srgb profile (the only one that doesnt totally jack up my images) and then either "save as" or "save for web" (doesn't seem to matter).

I'm sure the REAL problem lies between the keyboard and the chair.

Nice drawing, XIA!
Very Happy
for those who are using art rage, pl save the file as bmp format instead of jpg, then convert bmp into jpg, in that way, the quality of your image will be better,
cheers
