I wonder,
Did you use any photo references in the actual overpaint?
meaning, other photos then the photoplate?

I pretty much know you didn't.
But one can't deny felling abit owned here.

Either way.
This is fantastic.
And you simply own!

Thank you for the very nice welcome. I really appreciate it.,

Kengi- Most of the paintings are 4k so that the detail compresses nicely at 2k. Some of them are 8k or even 12k like the big Pelennor fields panoramas.

allpetter-Yes I did use photo reference, otherwise the film would never have been finished! 90% of matte painters use photo reference, the other 10% are liars. It is what you do with the photo reference that counts.

WTF ?! u did matte paints for LOTR ??? I wish i was part of the team..If i could only clean the toilets i would have been happy..How much time and what techniques did it take you to do these LOTR mattes ???

I would guess...1 week of 8 hours painting per day for each matte ?

I dunno about the rest of you, but I can't help feeling somewhat star struck... the LOTR trilogy is the most visually astounding piece of work I've seen yet.

Are you working on any movies right now? (any that you're allowed to mention?)

Since seeing the incredible work of the Ellenshaw's and their cohorts, I've always had a great love for Matte Paintings. I'm sure you're aware of the nice book by Mark Cotta Vaz (which I have yet to look at).

As well the elder Ellenshaw has a very nice book I picked up from Bud Plant that shows some of his work with Gardens and Landscapes on his own. I'd like to pick up the new book on his career as well.

Very nice work and consider yourself lucky to have been part of the many projects you have worked on. I know there's many on this board alone who would kill for a job on some of those films!

Great stuff and thanks for sharing! Looking forward to more.

Looks like I'll be seeing a lot of your work this summer:

Quote:
SKY CAPTAIN, WORLD OF TOMORROW: Matte Painter

I, ROBOT: Matte Painter

CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: Lead Matte Painter

VAN HELSING: Matte Painter

I really can't wait for Chronicles of Riddick. I just love the look of that movie. Nice work. Very Happy

Thanks again for the nice comments.

starglider2-As far as how long each took...some of those were done in only about a day and a half, while others took about a week. Then there were a lot of small revisions to make before everyone was happy. Most of the time we were working on the main paint build of a painting while touching up several others. Our days were also broken up with meetings and dailies, so it was rare to actually be painting the whole day.

alen-As to what I am working on now, I am working on I, Robot and a couple shots for a small romantic comedy. I will soon be vfx art director on the Ring 2.

Spooky-Yes, the Ellenshaws rock. They are both fantastic and really nice people who are enthusiastic about their work. If you haven't checked out Invisible Art, go get a copy right now. It is breath-taking. My prized possession.

A day and a half for some of them? Wow.
Were any of them projected onto a 3d geometry?
How were lava and smoke animated from a painting?

Great matte paintings.
