I could have upgraded, but there is an offer on Wacom's sight that is $20 cheaper (USD) buying new, than Corel's upgrade cost of $149.00.

So... it's been a while since I've tried Painter... My problem with it in the past has always been how clunky the layers system worked. This layer for that and that layer for this... very confusing and a real momentum blockage.

How are the layers working in Painter 8? Any info would be great...

Phil,

Photoshop users seem to like Painter 8 Layers better than those of previous versions. Since I'm not a heavy Photoshop users, I can't say exactly how much better they are for PS users.

They are easier for me to work with and I was used to how they worked back to Painter 4 when we only had Floaters.

The older version Layer Visibility Masks are now Painter 8 Layer Masks displayed to the right of the Layer in the Layers palette and also in the Channels palette.

The older version User Masks (saved selections) are now Alpha Channels, displayed in the Channels palette.

I doubt that it's a perfect match to Photoshop, but think you'll find it easier to work with Painter 8.

Hope so!

Because of the brush technology unique to Water Colors and Liquid Ink, those brush variants only work on their respective Layer types, Water Color Layers and Liquid Ink Layers.

Digital Water Colors work on either the Canvas or on Layers, but it's important to note that they need to be dried to avoid some unwanted results when painting with certain DWC variants over color previously painted with other DWC variants. To dry DWC paint, use Ctrl/Command+Shift+L.

The unwanted result follows erasing or deleting previously painted DWC color, then painting over that area again. You'll learn when this needs to be done by experimenting with the DWC variants for a while.

There's lots more to say, but it'd take too long. If you run into problems, just ask and someone will be happy to help out.

Have fun!

You can't flip the layers in unison, like a Canvas Flip in Photoshop.

Haha, everyone's probably tired of me saying that again, and again, and again... though maybe it will appear in P9, who knows...
