My grandparents are coming home from vacation and they aer passing a very good art store. they said they would pick me up anything i need. When i started oil painting a month or so ago i picked up some beginning series winsor and newton "winton oil colour" paints. After i bought those, someone gave me some series 3 and 4 w&n artists oil paints. i quickly discovered though how much better series 3, 4 and so on paints are because they dont get muddy as easily. I just would like to replace some of my series 1&2 paitns with some better ones from my grandparents, and also pick up some important colors i dont have. I'm not too good yet
(heres my second paitning of skin:

Could you tell me some paints to replace (of all the ones i have) with better ones, and also which new ones i should get? I don't need tons of extra colors, just some essential ones that yuo see i could be missing:
Series 1 & 2 paints I bought (replace as necessary):
-Cadmium red hue
-titanium white
-french ultramarine
-cadmium yellow hue
-yellow ochre (yellow iron oxide)
-paynes gray
-light red
-cadmium yellow pale hue
-burnt sienna
-viridian hue
Good paitns my friend gave me (any additional ones i need?):
-cadmium lemon
-Phthalocyanine blue (this is actually an ultrecht brand paint, i dont know if thats good or not)
-cadmium red
-burnt sienna
-magnese blue
-alizarin crimson
-burnt umber
-viridian
-permanent blue
-raw umber
-yellow ochre (this is a grumbacher series paint mixed in there, not w&n. i dont know if this is good either). |

You need:
Cobalt Blue
Ivory Black
Titanium White
Cadmium Red
Yellow Ochre
You can create just about any color by mixing the above colors, which helps with keeping a clean palette.
You can also buy:
French Ultramarine
Prussian blue (this is the same as the phalocyanine blue you already have)
Lemon yellow
Sap Green
Cerulean
Viridian
Cadmium red light
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Yellow
Burnt umber
Raw umber
Burnt Sienna
Raw Sienna
Paynes grey
I realize that a lot of the colors on this list overlap with the ones you already have, so you might consider using up your existing paints and just putting down some extra chump change on the colors I mentioned at the top, since you'll be doing some extra mixing. I made the colors you don't you have boldface, for quick reference. _________________ QED, sort of. |
