Geez, seems like everyone liked that street one a lot. Thanks for the compliments! Once again I dont know what will sell.
mikko, in ID they do teach you that you can reason through things, and to think about it. It is necessary to describe objects that eventually might be built. In illustration, the reaction is to make it "tight and clean" lighting and materials and dimensionality play a very reduced role. I think it is an attempt to flatten things out a bit and allow the larger message of the illo to shine through as opposed to a simple description of visual information.
Capt Fred, yes what you mention also heightens the effect.
This is a speed painting that I got paid for! This was my goal in starting to do these things so long ago. This is for a movie called Runelords, starting to shoot this summer.

Spooge: Reminds me of Hessian horseman from Sleepy Hollow.
What comes to my painting abilities, I realise I'm nowhere near your league, but I still want to point out that composition of the picture little bit bothers me. Hope you don't mind my critiques. To me seems that the guy is just added to the picture foreground and does not seem to have really a place in the composition? Also the feet of the character looks a bit unnaturally flat and off perspective.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm a big fan of your work and I do realise this is just a speed painting. It's just so rare that I (or anyone else) find anything negative to say about your pictures that I might as well say it this time I have.
Anyway thanks for sharing your pictures and thoughts here in Sijun. They've saved my day many times and I think I've learned a lot from you.

Eh hard to find time to join you guys, I feel being left behine Impossible to mention all the names, this thread's going crazy!
I did a few concept sketches for an architecture project, it's a city complex locating in Minster/Germany. They wanted something "fresh" than those perfectly rendered architectural scenes, seldom to meet architects with similar tastes as mine, heh...yet, a precise describtion of the form/space of the building is necessary, so it's not really that quick than it might look, had a hard time struggling with atmospheric elements too, I used to mess up pictures way too much and it really bothered the building's facades.
Oh forget to mention...lighting is totally WRONG in this one, but I did cheat their eyes he he...

You're coming up with some pretty crazy armor designs there, Summer Pudding. Nicely done.

Haven't posted anything in a while, but I thought I would add some things to the discussion about painting water.
First, the water up the north and south is much greener than the water anywhere else. That's because there are a lot more of those small greens things floating around in the water there (don't know what they're called in english). The are so many that the water doesn't look that green at all, instead more black.
This might be commonly know, might not, I've learnt it in school and I don't know if anyone else knows it so I thought I'd post it:
Here's some stuff about why water has a different colour at the horizon. Ehm, I don't really know how to say this so I'll make a small image, a quite bad image I i may say it myself, since it's probably weird and hard to understand. It's about refraction, reflection and some other stuff.
http://user.tninet.se/~bwe399n/reflectionrefractionandstuf.gif
and here's an image, to compensate for the mess. Made it for a friends birthday. In engloish the text says: "Congratulations Daniel, you're really old now"
(He just turned 17 I'm still 16)
