I've been asked by my lecturer to do a report determining the employment trends in a multimedia-related position.
The list of positions to choose from are, Graphic artists (illustrators, image editors), Animators, and interface designers. I would guess those who do digital painting as a profession fall under the illustrator category (but then i could be wrong) and that position is what i'm interested in doing the report most.

The information I'm required to include are:

position title
position description
trends in employment growth (is the forecast to increase or decrease in employment)
pay range (no exact figure required)
skills needed
education needed

I know the topic seems boring, but theres nowhere else I know to get this kind of info (and i'm really interested in knowing more about being employed as a digital artists, cause i'm seriously considering it). For those who do not want their information displayed publicly but are willing to answer then please e-mail me the info. Any answers or other related advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank u all for your time. Smile

This is a question you're better researching by going to the department of labor and the occupational outlook website. I seriously doubt that anyone here could give you any hardline numbers unless they're job is taking and recording numbers like these. I DID do some research on digital artists on the occupational outlook website and I found that digital artists, of even graphic artist isn't considered a career field worth keeping record of, so I have seriously doubt that you'll be able to get any information of worth to you on this topic.

Since this is research for coursework you're going to look for them yourself. I suggest that you hit up google.com for those particular websites. Best of luck with your paper.

Well actually, for the interviewing part i'm only meant to get info regarding the employee's opinions on the job and how its faring. I just wanna know the:

position title
brief description of the title
how he/she feels about how people of the same position are faring today

(ex. how was being an illustrator before like compared to now? are they getting payed more? or an even more detailed approach - is it easier for a good/tallented illustrator to find work nowadays? is the demand for illustrators more than before? is it likely to increase in the future?)

pay range (for starters, for those with experience, higher positions such as art directors)
skills needed
education needed

The information doesn't have to be purely factual, it can be opinion based as well, and it doesn't have to be specificly based on those answering, it maybe just a general opinion on a title also. are these uncomfortable questions to answer? I really hope i get some replies, i really need some.
thx Smile

Hi,

You might do well to post your question to the Illustrators list at Yahoo! Groups since those folks talk a lot about how it is finding jobs these days.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/illustrators/messages

You may find it hard to get figures for how much illustrators are paid by companies or charge as freelancers because I think it's considered either unethical or maybe even illegal to discuss pricing. The reason I've heard, is that it can be considered price fixing. The Illustrators list members can explain that better than I can, however.

For figures, you might try looking at job listings on some of the job sites, though that wouldn't tell you what freelance illustrators are paid.

Good luck,

Hi,

You'll first need to sign up at Yahoo! Groups (you'll see the "Sign up" link at the top of the page, just to the right of the Yahoo! Groups logo):

http://groups.yahoo.com/

Then, I think if you go to the Illustrators group home page, you'll be able to join that group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/illustrators/

Good luck,
