I was hoping someone out there can help me out. I'm running windows xp pro. I try to open up painter and i get an error as

"not enough memory to run Painter" My machine is a 3.o mhz with 768 megs of ram.

I am trying to run painter 5.5 it works fine on windows 2k but now doesn't work on windows xp pro.

any advice would be greatly appreciative.

Hi quattro,

Here are a couple of suggestions you might try:

Use Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance area > Settings button > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory area > Change button (or however it's set up on XP Pro.. I'm using XP Home)

Then, some Painter users say to set the Virtual Memory to 512Mb and restart your system.

Or....

Another Painter user explains that older versions of Painter had trouble with over .5GB RAM, though he says he ran 6.1 on his 768MB system for a while with no problems. He suggests lowering the virtual memory setting to less than 2GB total (virtual plus real) RAM.

And....

I have my Virtual Memory set to 768 MB and Painter 5.0.3, Painter 6.1, Painter 7.1.357, and Painter 8.1 are running just fine.

Also....

I'm running both Painter 5.0.3 and Painter 6.1 on WinXP Home in compatibility mode with Windows 98/Windows ME without any problems. To set this up:

Right click the Painter5.EXE or Painter55.exe file, however it's spelled (or Painter61.exe file for anyone reading this who has Painter 6 or 6.1), choose Properties, click the Version tab and, in the Compatibility Mode area, check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box, then choose Windows 98/Windows ME from the drop down list, and click the OK button.

Good luck,
