hmmmm I was just wondering, being that I know there a quite a few atheists on the board, well this is a question to you. Have you/will you get married? Do atheists marry if they love someone, even though they deny the varification of the Church's actions?

I was just wondering =)

You don't have to be Christian/Bhuddist/Baha'i etc. to marry.

Love is for mating, humans are animals so just look at how cats and bears do it - no difference with humans.

To get married in the Netherlands you need to go to a city hall and be married by a government official. Church marriage is not recognised as a legal marriage. Although it is often done anyways. (In which case people actually get married twice)
I don't really see why you have to be religious to get married. A vow is a vow. whether for god or for yourself. It all comes down to the same thing.
I actually felt kind of insulted by this question.
I got married at 21 while I was of no particular religion nor did I believe in god . That doesn't mean that I take my marriage less serious.

I've wondered about that myself. Where will I get married? I've decided it will be wherever my fiance wants to. Frankly it makes no difference to me.

Ben Barker: "Frankly, my dear, i dont give a damn!"

I dislike being in churches in general, and whenever possible I try not to go into them... I just don't feel comfortable in them... first of all, obviously I don't agree with them, and second of all I think it's sort of rude for me as a 'believing atheist' to go in and rummage about in something so important to other people.

So about marriage... in Sweden we can either get married in city hall or in church, both are equally valid... as my girlfriend/soon to be feonc is american I'm not sure what she wants... I'm not sure I'd be entirely comfortable making a promise like that to a deity I don't believe in, but if it's important to her, then as Ben said, frankly I don't give a damn, but I'd rather do it in city hall.

No plans to ever get married here. Of course, I might be tempted to play along if I manage to strike up a serious relationship with Kim Basinger or someone of a similar ilk.

Yeah, not everyone gets married in a church. Me and the wifee got married by a justice of the peace. Didn't want the hassle of the whole church thing and all the expense, just grabbed a few close friends and family and went out to his place and got hitched.

And no, she wasn't pregnant.

Marriage has existed in some form or another in most cultures, even non-religious ones, and whether or not you're making a promise to a deity as well as to another person, the basic concept behind it is pretty much the same. Besides, there are many legal benefits as well as societal standards relating to marriage, so the issue goes beyond just religion.

If I ever do get married it will probably be at a Unitarian Universalist church (traditional atmosphere but without any of the dogma that goes along with it) or just a justice of the peace thing.

By no means am I an Athiest, but Marriage is purely a legelly binding contract, whether its done by church or state.. in the eyes of the legal system it all counts.. unless the person who performs the wedding isnt licenced for it.

[edit]one day Ill learn to spell.

Crap, that means my plans to be married by a slightly retarded, Mongolian midget aren't going to realize themselves.
