I find all my ref material by google imaging "woman"..
Missed alot in colourpicking I think, as she ended up looking a bit desaturated and weak colourwise.. and lost some of the red/magenta tones as well. Lotsa flaws in this one I guess, but it was fun making. (Made it in pchat, so it's actually 100%) I like that kind of haircut, dunno why I went green, probably cause of the magenta..

Niles : Oh yeah! Thank you, nice spotting, I probably wouldn't have seen it myself. :) I thought the skewed feeling came from the jawline/ear, but the chin is adding to it. Thanks alot. (I'm really trying to stop making all my usual faults in facial anatomy, such as putting the nose too close to the mouth. It's hard work to get it out of my system..)

I really like how you added the imperfections in her skin. |

Maybe it's me, but I think the chin is generally in the right place. If it looks too far forward it's because of the curve of the cheek. The cheek is painted slightly concave when it looks in the photo to be slightly convex -- actually there is a slight bulge around the lips in the photo that alters the silhouette of the cheek. In the photo, the cheek edge silhouette has 3 distinct bulges: the cheekbone, the mouth bulge, and the chin.
The forehead is painted shorter, with the direction change lower and closer to the eyes than it appears to me in the photo. The shorter forehead makes the face slightly too large, which makes the eyes move out of their usual "halfway in the middle of the head" position to more of a 60% - 40% position.
All in all I think it's a nice painting, though. |

lenoa > thank you, me too.. I'm getting tired of the vinyl-look :)
tiger > yeah, especially the ear/jaw connection, I don't think I will alter it on this one, but keep it in mind for later work.
jfrancis> thank you! very good points all of them, great critique. (I have a really bad habit of warping features in portraits from a history of clean stylized/comic art, thus the need for portrait study/-ies.) You're homepage is great btw, I browsed it earlier (reading it properly piece by piece when I got time) and theres alot in it that many artists are missing out on, painters & photographers alike. |
