What is the lowest number you can make out?

I gather that you should be able read down to 2, but that the left most square should be completely black (in ideal conditions with no glare). This is what I see, and my monitors a cheap iMac thing. Yet, I remember some people not being able to see some of my images at all, save for some random highlights here and there, because they were too dark.

I'd be interested to find out what other people are seeing.

I hope I haven't annoyed they guy who I stole this gray-scale from. I just pulled it right out of a a post in a WIP thread. No disrespect intended.

I can see down to 2, although it is a bit hard to make out.

But monitor brightness is something I've noticed many problems with. For various reasons from burnt hardware to just incorrect settings, other peoples monitors are often set too dark.

4 is the last distinct square I can make out, but I'm on a PC, with gamma 2.2, not a mac ( gamma 1.8 ).

Evryone who voted should go back and mention which computer and which browser

I can make out the difference between 3,2 and 1, but the lowest number that is legible is 3.

Win XP, 2.20 Gamma, NEC AccuSync 70. Calibrated with Adobe Gamma.

I can make out the 2. A little tough, but when I look hard, I can make out its entire "2" shape. The grayscale looks pretty balanced to me.

G4 Mac, OS X, Safari browser, not-terribly-fancy LCD monitor.

I calibrate the hell out of my computer and I also adjust my monitor. Not so much to get the colors "just so" (there's only so much adjusting you can do with a not-terribly-fancy LCD), but because having it too dark really bugs me.

Mac Studio Display 21" (calibrated), IE5 & Safari... same as several others. I can see 2 fairly clearly, and I can see the break between 1 and 2, but not the number 1 itself.

Do Mac's not have a different Gamma setting than Windows PCs?

IIRC, gamma levels on the Mac are slightly brighter than the PC. So if you're doing medium values on a Mac, it might appear a little darker on the PC.

I dunno. Just offering ideas.

Sure, kynes. it's only a pretty vague test though.. was just interested in generalities. Probably other factors other than gamma, ie. rubbish monitor brightness settings, probably mean that overall the gamma differences won't affect much.

I can barely see any changes form 1 to 2, but 3 (up to 9) is clear visible.

Most people seem to have such settings, because most pictures looks quite good to me. Wink

I figure it's a little different on LCD screens than on other screens... I have an LCD screen which has "auto adjust" function and I can make out till 3. I do see a slightly blacker bit in the square where "2" should be, but that's only if I stare long. Very Happy

If I tweak all settings to unusable proportions, I can see 3. With normal settings I can see 5. Just goes to show that I need a new monitor.
