I decided to try to make daily sketches here since I can't really do speedpainting after work anymore (staring at the computer all day hurts my eyes Smile ), so I went back to pencil and pen and less digital.
Here is to start off with

Random quickie doodle...for possible personal project that will never comes to life.

Another one of the same. I did this one first but I really didn't like the look.

Chinese Vampire?

Some sort of Zombie or Undead...

Some quick gestures:

Great stuff XIA. Daily scribbles are important. I do countless of them.
I'm working my ass off with tarditional medias (pencil..no painting thought). Quess I am still to bad for digitalpainting. Still can't bring harmony between me and my wacom.

The first character is really cool. The gestures are awesome.
I hope you will finish your project. Post more!!

Max>> Thanks buddy! hey I always love your digital piece, they are please to look at. Me too still have lots of problems with painting. For a while in the beginning, I get better and better every single time I painted, but then...sometimes I got worse and worse or not getting it the way I wanted. It's hard, really hard to get the result one's intentionally wants to create. We r all still learning and progressing....hoping to be a better craftman. I sort of study painting under "ABCArt" supervision (he posts in life drawing thread sometimes) and also I work with him. Great artist...learn a lot from him in the past couple years.

Project? Ah...I doubt I will ever finish it. Laughing Laughing Laughing
Since this is my daily doodle...I might as wel post this one here too.

Couple hours from life

hey xia again.

have you been experimenting anything with focal-points and such? well I am trying to make that thing to work but it is very difficult but I have noticed with characters that more attention to different places make people look at that direction. With characters it can be important to pay more attention to the face and then go downwards to in the bottom have the painting very loose. I made an over-paint to show you. To explain it I added some detail to the face and also the shoulders and followed the shoulders down a bit with detail then I left the rest. Also the background I cleaned up a bit in the top and followed it down a bit to leave it bottom halfway.
Maybe I am totally into deep water here and I dont wanna show what values to use and how u should do but I hope it helps a bit. Otherwise I like the life-painting and the attention to different colors and values u have used.

Heres the over-paint:

I used a similar tecnique in this piece and that way u can leave the other stuff very loose, just focal-point at the face and a little bit attention to the shoulders. What you think? Maybe I am the only that think it works, maybe this piece is very busy?

well I thought I can give u a tip regarding this, feel free to give me a tip too regarding my stuff if you have seen anything that I am missing in my work.

Regarding as what drunken Monkey said, I am really learning too by looking at your life-drawings, I am still confused how u can catch all that dynamics. how do you do those? do you start out with thinking box-thinking and then add some quick lines? or do you just follow the motion?
Can u give me some hints or show me a quick tutorial on it I would really appreciate it. Smile

keep up the good work xia

Here we go some more Craps!!!
Few hours from life:

Some REALLY QUICK character study/sketches. I gotta learn how to stop rushing my way thru sketch pages...

Something went wrong on this one...It didn't really come out like what I wanted, I screwed up somewhere along the process of scribble. Maybe better luck next time...

Now, this is more like it...

More Gestures Craps: Ballpoint pen.

I love your drawings, those "cartoon" girls look so real that I wouldn't even get scared if they wound start to move on my screen, jump down and break my wacom.
Especially I like the clothes and the facial expressions.
I guess that you do this as work.
(damn this english is hard *mumbles*)

Max K>> Nice to hear U are working hard on stuff and stuff. Drawing is great for u, u always learn something from drawing which u can apply to painting vice versa. Also 3D is good to know... 'cuz the better the modeller/sculpture u r...u can apply that to ur drawing and painting, even more so when u do concept. If u understand how is made then u know if the concept is possible to be made in 3D. Awesome!!! U have to show us some stuff now.

Been busy....but here it is...
Some quick skintone study (sorry, double post in speedpaint):

Same, but a lot smaller.

Yeah, that's the reason. This is why I have to learn some 3d.
I posted some stuff in the anatomy thread...my paintings always suck so I don't like to show 'em Cool Well,...maybe..sometime...
I noticed that you use a nice red pencil or something, that's interesting.
This works too I quess.
Man, post some more characters...they rae so nice...I have to learn that too.

Max>> Thanks for being supportive all these time. U don't suck at all...I've seen your work. And the red pencil is col-erase, they are widely use in 2D animation house...great waxy texture and cannot be smear. U keep it up too.

visio>> Thanks Buddy

Speed painting craps: ( I try using diff texture brushes as SAMMY suggested, thanks to SAMMY)

One min Gestures:

Three min Gestures...I try to get out of my usual way of doing gesture and do something different this time.

Twenty min study from live:

Hey, you're welcome, and...thanks Very Happy
Pretty cool stuff. I especially like the second one and your gestures.
I still wonder how you achieve these great rythm lines.
Lifedrawings are great too. And, of course the character sketch. wow, you now, I love 'em.
Red pencils, blue pencils..haha, that's really cool. I have to get some of them. At the moment I use blue color pencisl. which works...kinda...ain't perfect...however
On what project are you working on the moment if I may ask.
Or is that topsecret Very Happy

XIA, nice work here XIA, I am very fund of your medieval stuff.
I hope u didnt mind that over-paint earlier, I suck at over-paints I know so I hope it was ok.

btw Max is on a language trip in the states for two weeks so I think he will be back after that in the forum, or maybe earlier cause he spooked about that he maybe could get internet access where he was gonna live.

So can you interact some of your 2d stuff into the 3d work? do you do any concepts also for your 3d work?
They should really use your skills in the 2d tecnique. Smile

keep it up XIA and I see you in the speedy

Matthew>> Thanks a lot there. I am in my phrase of studying the scene as a whole study and compositon and lighting stuff. I really need to do that because it is my weakness at the moment, plus I've never really paint the whole scene so far. I always focus on only figure itself and forget the rest. It's was a bad habit. Don't worry about the overpaint thinging, u always give me idea and your work has come a long way...one of the inspiring source you are. Without this thread and u guys, I wouldn't even thinking about doing this daily and trying to work hard.

As for my thought on 3D, I believe if u can draw well or do traditional stuff well. 3D or digital is easy because u already have basic. All u need to do is learn the tool.

My 2D skill is still not where I want it to be, I am not ready to just cranking out concept...maybe when I get better. Plus I am probably one of the least experienced guy in the industry/company. I do mostly 3D for work, sometimes and recently concepting some stuff. Fun fun. I like it but lots of pressure when doing concept because it's difficult to make everyone happy. Different people have different taste for look and all.

Thanks for stoping by.

Warhead82>> Thanks a lot buddy, I am flatter. Human anatomy? Um...I am still learning myself. Though I can pass on tips that others who have inspire me told me.

-Life drawing...lots and lots of life drawing. I am sure there are session in BC somewhere. Attend life drawing session at least once a week, or twice if you are really hardcore about it. Drawing from life will increase your speed, accuratcy, eyes/hands coordination, and thinking process. You will see the big different in your drawing within three to six months. This is the most important key to human anatomy study since we really begin to study them.

-Life study bibles go get them from these guys. George Bridgeman, Andrew Loomis (U can't buy it nowadays, but it avaliable to download over the internet for free on some sites and Glenn Vilpu. Read (which I don't usually do) and look at their sketches/ drawing carefully, analize how they did what they do....and how they translate reality into their line.

-Study from good photo ref...this is not as important as drawing from life but it helps refine your level of detail.

Hope that helps...it works for everyone. Embarassed

Sorry, no pic today...very busy. Maybe tomorrow. Razz Embarassed
