Okay, I've wanted to have a flash page for a while now. I've been hesitant for many reasons though. But the assurance that it'll be compatible cross platforms, browsers, computers, etc. plus the speed, is a plus I just can't pass up.
Let me know what you think. All kinds of critiques are welcome.
Thanks in advance,

It's a nice clear site, it's all laid out well and it all makes sense. I do, however, have some reservations. I'm a flash developer for a design agency in London, and I long ago set myself a number of caveats that govern how and where I should use flash on the web.
The first and the largest states that 'if building something in flash doesn't bring anything to a job that flat HTML couldn't, why am I using flash at all?' Essentially, If I build a page in flash and the end result is indistinguishable from the same page built in HTML, I should have done it in HTML to start with. Otherwise it's a waste of my time, and more over, it's a waist of time for the people downloading it - particularly if they have to wander off and dl the plugin.
My primary concern is that I don't see anything in your flash site that couldn't have been done through HTML; there's simply no reason for you to have built it in flash, other than to experiment and learn.
I encourage you to carry on using flash and continue to expand your knowledge of it. On the whole, it's a good little site.

Well Plumb,
I think you bring up a good point. But to tell you the truth, I think there are many things I'm doing that html puts limitations on. For example:
-I've got objects with 8 bit alpha's overlapping my content.
-I've got large blocks of vector graphics in the background that would have taken a lot of space if I had made them in raster form.
-Once the page is loaded, switching from one section to another is instantaneus, rather than seeing the whole page blink to white and then start loading all the new thumbnails one at a time.
-This whole site is less than 250 k. Had I done this with html, meaning using raster graphics for everything, It would probably be close to a megabyte, meaning longer loading time.
Heck, not to mention the fact that I don't have to worry about cross-platform compatibility is good reason enough for me. Also with flash you have infinite control with the layout and placement of things. |

Nice, but doesn't work in Firefox or Opera for me. Had to reboot to Windows and use IE (since niether Opera nor Firefox for Windows worked, either)*blegh* . _________________ "Keep on beating and sharpening a sword, and the edge cannot be preserved for long." -Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching |

Ugh! You're right neewom. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll see if I can figure out why. |
