Here are a few doodles in gouache from my little 5 x 7 sketch book. These are stress release sketches and cure my itch to do details. And I enjoy studying master works I think are so well composed, such as the Berkey, the Cornwell, Sunbloom and the car which the artists name slips my mind...

Tear em up....

Nice as always Ron. One question I have is how do you approach quick, small, paint sketches that still require mechanical perspective (like your A-10 thunderbolt planes)? I seem to either get caught up in perspective plannnig and lose the spontaneous feel, or just jump in and get stuck with errors. I know, like most things, it's mostly practice, but any comments would be great.

BTW: my favorite is the industrial harbor one, from photo or life? And are these limited pallettes?

These are excellent fred/Ron Wink Nice to see some stuff from you again ! I never had a sketch book before, atleast which I take as seriously as this (you should sell it)...... When I have like quality sketchbooks with quality paper, I tend to screw up from page 1, I need my thin cheap xerox papers to feel comfortable, hehe.

WHat are you doing these days btw ?

craban, I have to agree, looking at a picture of him the other day...I even think he is green now tooo...heh

Joachim-thank you very much, considering you have been busting out some of the coolest stuff I have seen, such finesse to the work.

I have been teaching full time, barely enough time to do much else because of that, and I have been taking painting classes with a spanish master 78 years old, taought by first generation Sorolla students...I have to say I have learned so much from him, I am indebted to him for sure....

and I have been doing a lot of freelance that I cant post yet because of NDA reasons...lots of painting....more than I ever thought I would get the chance to do....and the classes I am teaching are teaching me so much about the things in art I was never taught. Composition the biggest one. I have learned more than enough about the golden rule, golden line...about formal and informal composition, etc. It is soo cool to finally say I understand it to a certain degree...not think I get it, but not really get it...

Anyway, I wish I had more time to do more, but I am really having a good time. I hope at some point I meet up with you and Micke and the rest of your art group before you all move off and become famous independent artists...are you planning any trips here to the states? Thanks again and I hope to hear from you again, and more often again.

Alan, I use a straight edge and an inking type brush, a Windsor Newton Series 7 no. 2 brush to do the line work. Its just inking in color...not that easy, but not that unattainable.

Everyone else, thank you for your kind words, I hope to post more of these soon...

this is incredible! I just don't know how you can do that! I've tried gouage a couple of times, but I don't understand how to use them, cause everytime I want to paint details the strokes become too wide, even though I use a small brush, and are you supposed to use them like regular wc's you know, "paint from light to dark"(I don't know the real name for it) ?

I love the kissing couple in the sofa, and, well all the others too hehe!

Ron is the paint man !!
The airplane painting looks more like a portal to a new world Smile

Really like everything in there. Glad to see you're still coming around here and sharing your stuff with us !

Cap'n - I don't know the details, but I think gouache is a bit like photoshop... you can have your hard-edged brushes, and just 'add' color over other colors.. don't know anything about the brushes though. I'm sure there's a way to get detail in there. Smile

What do I know, I'm just here freezing my ass in Canada. Smile

Man, I really admire your control with gouache. I remember that evil stuff from school. I just ended up with a smeary mess-not stable enough for me I guess.
Really nice sketches.

Wow these are incredible! And you say that they are just doodles in a sketch book...
The thunderbolts and tugboat industrial are great, although my favs would have to be the choppers and the car. Again awesome work!!

I do have a question though. How much time did you spent on one of these pics?

Thanks for all the inspiration! I've wanted to try gouache for a long time, but now I'll have to pick up a set of 'em here really soon. Very Happy

Man...first I re-read Kingdom Come (also painted in gouache), then this... man. Inspiring me to re-learn how to paint traditionally. (And learn gouache to.)
