Expand your melodic possibilities. Listen to some good piano solos and you'll hear the melody going up and down diferent octaves. Also, vary your timing so that you're not repeating the same rythmn with your notes. 16th notes, 32 notes...etc. Listen to any jazz piano and you'll hear that it sounds very "alive," as if talking and emoting. Try strengthening your improvisation skill by playing along with different kinds of music, while adding to it, and riding on top of it. It's a great way to train yourself to be a better musician and adapting to different keys signatures and timing. Ideally, you should be able to sit down and play along/on top of any kind of music, even if you've never heard it before. Improv skill is very important for composing--because it give you the gift of variation and unpredictibility. |
