Hey guys, I have been quite busy with work and have (potentially) a few very cool gigs lined up for this year. Tell you later if it works out.
This is something I've cranked out in my spare time, 003 done for the book "New masters of Photoshop 2", published by APress. I've written one tutorial chapter and it'll be released soon. The chapter takes the reader through the entire process of creating this image from scratch.
The lighting in 003 in not water proof and is a bit of a cheat, but I think it works overall.

Both are great!
The top one has a nice mix of ultra tightness and sloppy looseness. Lovely.
I absoluty love the clouds in the back of the bottom one.
Great. Lookin forward to hear what new you have to tell, hehe.

I really love both of them, Especially the fine rendering versus the rough strokes in the top picture.
How did you create the grainy look in the clouds in the second one?
Is it a custom brush?
You have great skills master Seung! |

Lovely work Henrik!
I especially like the high hills in the first one. The lighning is wonderful.
The buildings looks abit flat thought, but it doesn't change the impression.
The second one is great too. Very dynamic and at the same time extremely detailed. Well done!!!
Can't await to see more of your stuff... |

thanks guys,
They're both part of the personal project Somnio, we'll see if that ever turns out well.
drunken> no, it's not the same book. I was asked to write for D'Artiste as well, but I didn't have time at the point.
Sukhoi> Thanks, I didn't plan the thing to come out like this initially. I wanted to paint an image with the style you see at the bottom. Something that at a first glance looks sloppy, but very controlled. I'm experimenting with the style right now, and a set of custom brushes makes it easier.
It turned out as the image progressed, that the building required more detail to show scale. The clouds in the background required scale. The only way to give images scale is to (except for rendering values and hues) keep contrast down (ie texture) and to render small details/reference points accurately. It was difficult to compromise where to stop, did I go too far etc? I don't know, but it was fun to paint.
Pringle> I got Photoshop CS since I wanted to try the new 16-bit support. Now, I don't know if it's my screen, videocard or PS CS...but the banding is still there. I started painting this one with trying out the new 16-bit feautures in mind. What would work better than subtle soft light and clouds, eh? Well, it still looked like 8-bit ...I simply couldn't tell the difference, so I switched to 8-bit pretty early on. (The speed decrease killed me). So the banding was pretty bad, so I applied a subtle texture over everything to break up the banding. But yes, it's painted with custom brushes as well.
Cicinimo> Until you get your feelings straight, let's be friends ,)
Max> Intitially, I wanted to create a sky with a lot less detail in the darks of the ground. I imagined almost black with bright point lights along the coast line. As I worked on it, I slowly introduced more and more light into it, kind of to enable me to go brighter with the sky.
Thanks again. _________________ http://www.somniostudios.com |

*gasp* so you declined to do D'Artiste with us and chose to do Maters of Photoshop 2? |

Both are truly beeutiful. And some people say digital is not 'real' art.
I'd like to know more about your custom brushes-or are they a secret? |
