I've been quite "ambitious" in the past time trying to improve in drawing and painting, and to somehow get foreward. Althought this seems not leading anywhere. Well at least what I obtain is no more satisfying to myself. Some time ago I have been reading someone, who said "Just do what you like", but it doesn't help in this situation. It somehow seems to be a part of this problem. How do you know wich direction to take? Is there is anything you can do about it, or just keep on drifting and keeping the faith, which I hope is not the way?

I'm not really sure what your problem is. Draw as much as possible, preferably from life. You don't have to select a "direction" as your own style will automatically develop as you learn. You can learn technique and understanding without choosing any favourite subject, just draw from life.

Start posting to these forums if you want criticism or guidance. Check the link archive http://www.sumaleth.com/links/ and read some books on drawing. I'm afraid there's no one thing that will help you, no shortcuts, you just have to keep drawing. Going to art school might be one option.

Not sure if this is what you meant by your questions Smile

Esp. read the comments by Jason Manley and Spooge Demon.... in fact any comment you can find by Spooge Demon (here on sijun) or Jason Manley (on conceptart.org). Copying master paintings, Fred Flickston's cube exercise, life drawing, drawing from plaster casts, study anatomy... there are many exercises that are important to building skills, and have been used for hundreds of years... with proven results. There is a group on conceptart.org called the middle class where you can find many of these. Post your work here and there so that you can get feedback. Don't just flounder around on your own, artists have been going through the same process as you for centuries, and there is alot of guidance to be had.
