I've started studying Industrial Design in Sep2003 and decided to post a few final assignments. Here they are in chronological order :
=====================================================
- Cellphone design, done 100% in Photoshop.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/cell.jpg - Full-size pic
Comments : No real limitations, simply to 'model' a new cellphone. Inspired by japanese cellphones. Teacher let us 'free'. 'Wireframe' done in tech-drawing program (like Autocad).
=====================================================
- Computer room design, done in 3DSMax with some Photoshop add-ons.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/room1.jpg - Full-size pic
Comments : Rules were to use 3D and all other softwares learned in CG class to make a room to support 6 PCs and 6 MACs. Teacher didn't specify what year of Macintoshes though. Wires were painted over in Photoshop. Easier that way, saves alot of polygons.
=====================================================
- Anesthesia Hospital Cart, done in 3DSMax with some preliminary sketches.
Comments : Assignment was to visit a hospital and try to talk with people who use carts in order to find out what's bad about them and try and design something that would be easier to use, etc.
Here are some other links :
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_beta.jpg - team submitted 3 concepts that others had to vote which was best. I drew the gray one that seems to be leaning over.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_model.jpg - 1/4 scale model of the cart, made in styrofoam.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_sketchwall.jpg - These are all the sketches my team drew. I drew the R2D2 one, as well as the ones with a black square behind.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_sketch1.jpg - Close-ups.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_sketch2.jpg - Close-ups.
http://lumental.com/sgrunger/chariot/chariot_sketch3.jpg - Close-ups.
That's about it. If you have any comments or questions, I'l gladly answer them. Industrial design rocks.

Great work man! - cool stuff - brings me back to my days in graphics in high-school.
Just a question, in some of your beta drawings, your marker drawings have a black part behind them - I also see them heaps in feng zhu's work and doug chiang's work. Whats the actual reason behind this, I assume its' just to see what it looks like with a black background. Is there any rules for how to use it?
Just wondering. |

From what i remember, the black or heavy coloured square backgrounds on marker renderings are to hide the marker strokes that went over the edges as with markers, long smooth strokes are prefered to get a nice finish so the artist tends to exceed the line edges.... and it looks cool |

I like all of them ... especially the 3DSMax Hospital Cart.
I'd kinda like to know what people found bad about other carts and what thoughts went into the design.
Can something actually be good and look good as well?
The Real Mark: Some people use such areas behind objects to play with Gestalt Theory.
To add depth I guess. Lung_Bug mentioned that in his sketchbook at CA. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

looks like your doin really good for your first year. I don't know if you had any vis com classes yet but the construction of some of your objects is kinda off.Some of the wheels don't look like they are attached, its cool though all stuff youll learn about in the vis comm classes. _________________ -Blade signing out- |

Snake Grunger: Wow, long time since I saw you post, these are awesome! Glad you're doing ID (and enjoying it, by the sounds of things!). I'd like to do ID but I'm too old now... too old to start the training... hrmmMMmmm.
I like the phone one best, looks very clean. |

Bob - Thanks for the update. As for dual-cpu, in french it's double-cpu, or double-processeur, I guess.
Blade - Vis comm classes I am following right now and indeed the sketches are very rough and not really planed. Wheels were just bolted as 'circles' next to the bottom four edges of the carts As for this being first year, well I was teamed up with another guy who completed a college degree in Industrial Design (not the same as UNI), and I had X years of CG experience in video-game/amateur paintingm, etc. We -did- put alot of work into everything.
AndyT - Well, it's not that all the other sketches were bad, it's simply that we had to chose and come up with 'one' final design.
RealMark - Black squares were my lame attempt to try and not to be lame. But in general, like stated by the others, it's to create depth, as if you have a contrasted background, would make the shapes of the object coming over it more 'solid'.
Fransua - Care to comment on the colors, rather than just say, "Ouch, my eyes!"
Ceenda - I wasn't aware that people remembered me here
Cap'n - Well, not sure how this is anything 'digital', but alright.
This is a design for an egg-container. Rules were as follows:
- Had to be able to hold 2 eggs of large caliber.
- Had to be able to take a 2 feet fall without the eggs breaking.
- Eggs must be exposed to air in order to 'breathe'.
Extra points would be received if you made the container easy to transport, cheap to manufacture, etc.
My design was made of only one piece of cut natural recycled cardboard, with absolutely no glue. The cardboard folds into an S shape and 4 flaps go into holes and stay in place. And even though the white text was applied on a sticker, in reality it would be printed over the cardboard. You may wonder, 'What if the eggs are smaller or bigger than the ones you used? They wouldn't fit or just slip through' That's right, and that's why I checked about 50 eggs, and made the egg-holes the size of the smallest large caliber egg I could find. I then added small cuts around the edges so that larger eggs could still push their way through and be held into place. |

Nooo wait ... that's what I was referring to:

What didn't people like about carts that actually exist?
The egg-container is totally crazy! You can't just not show it ...
digital or not. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

I love the egg container, it rocks. Reminds me of those menus for single people. Why buy 10 eggs if you only need 2. |

AndyT - What's wrong with the carts on the market today? Alot of stuff. The one we saw didn't have room or space for a laptop PC, so they put it on a stool next to the cart, drawers too deep so it's hard to reach what's all the way back, etc.
Thanks for the comments on the egg container. 2-egg containers already exist in Japan though. |

Nice designs and drawings!
You should patent the egg holder. But in order to patent something it should not have been showed to too much public. So take it easy with showing it... |

Latest project in progress.
3 concepts for alarm clocks for the hard of hearing.
1st concept, airblower that will diffuse mist onto the sleepers bed (may cause trouble, but initial idea and may be developped).
2nd concept, something to put over your existing matress that will have small pistons (?) things that will raise or lower in animated patterns to simulate like water waves under the sleeper, or random bumps, etc.
3rd one, vibrating bracelet, sucks. Sorry for all that french, I know it can be confusing. |
