Simoom, i don't think so. (Well im not here just to watch women, there are better sites for this)
zhuzhu wrote: "Duracel: sorry, i can't read so much english word.if you don't like my painting ,that's ok."
Sorry, is this how you handle critic? My english is by far not too complex to understand.
Ok, well, again:
_I really like your paintings_, but i saw enough of your girls from ref.
It looks like all you can do is copy some PinUp-photos ... but that is just boring, especially if you do this twice on each page of this thread.
The both sportsman and the cartoon-style were nice to look at, but you did enough of those girls as on this page again.

shorter: Please no more girls from you here, but instead something different would be fine! OK?
And Something complete out of mind instead from ref would be great.

(PS: If you "can't read so much english word", get a dictionary.)

YVerloc, great racing-car!! You got the lighting in this one.

Capt.Fred, dig the dog and nice subtle colors.

Wasssup, great to see you in action. Very Happy

Prometheus, you're one of only a few people where the standard-brush looks just great to me everytime!

Not to argue duracel, but 2/3rds of the images on this page so far are of women, yours included. Zhuzhu has obviously been trying different styles constantly over the course of his posting here, and that he paints the same subject matter rather consistently doesn't strike me as being much different from someone who paints diverse subjects in the same style over and over. Given the nature of this forum and art in general, i don't think there's anything wrong with painting what you enjoy, even if, i'll admit, branching out some wouldn't hurt.

Simoom, I agree with you. I think it's possible to experiment with variety of styles in the same subject matter. It's funny though that my girlfriend thinks this is some kind of 'I can draw boobs' forum because a lot of beginning people choose that as their primary subject, haha.

edit: Duracel, I admit that using a lot of reference photos kind of sucks the life out of the work and most of all, makes you look like a lot better artist than you are. Boris Vallejo, anyone?

Latelly many people have been posting alot of softcore-porn style paintings of girls, making it quite embarrassing surfing this thread at work, I scroll carefully, hoping I won't get a pair of huge tits up on my 24" monitor while the clients are here! maybe we should make a pin up girls thread, cause many of the girls are very well painted, but it almost feels like I'm surfing porn in front of 40 people Sad

I don't have any paintings to show but here are some (not so good) mastercopies of John Singer Sargent's drawings.
I don't have the right charcoals. His stuff looks so soft...anyone knows what paper, charcoal's he used?
I just have this odd graphite pencils. Can't achieve his style. Oh, well...

thanks!

zhuzhu>> i think you kinda misunderstood Duracels words.he just wants to see more subjects comming from you than just pinup girls, and some others enjoy your various styles of painting.theres absolutely no WRONG or SHOULD DO in arts, all depends on you,you decide.id like to see both: something creative and fresh style.remember that samurai pic you did without ref a while back? was a good try,i guess.
Dura>> backlight looks very nice!
YV>> great light going on in the last one,i like the subtle one better though.
axhv>> ID=Industrial Design

crap over,need something to post.here we go,ps4 rail-console

Duracel:

maybe i had draw too much female piece, but i enjoy it.if you feel boring, don't see it. i also can say why most piece of this thread are about violence, dark arts, machines? boring too.i think anybody have their taste.why Degas paint so much ballet and nude women piece? boring?

everyone has the selfway, internet is a free place, are you the policeman of sijun.com? if i tird to drawing female,i will change style.anyway,i always use photo ref,but i do not just copy every details,i try to give them new colors, new lighting, new feeling.

i said, up to now,all my paintings just practice,if some day,i can cortrol the shape, lighting, color very well,so paint without ref will get easy.otherwise, paint from memory only can make trash.

opps, maybe i have speak too much,i should drawing more. sorry Duracel, i won't affront you.thanks for your advice, maybe i can express myself in chinese better. if you got a chinese dictionary.

Wasssup: i will try more ,but need times.

Zuuzuu: I dont get your point.. if you said that drawing from memory makes only trash? why are u still stubborn even spooge and wassup said thayt your samurai was good try. I think too. I can promise that I will be BETTER than you if you're keeping going draw from ref while I draw sucking damn bad pictures from memory and never get comments for my shitpieces (matthew i know). the time will show as well .. I dont mean to be cocky but I will maybe have right. I respect your way of thinking as artist or illustrator. Peace

Tomasis~ i dont think you are 100% correct. While it isnt going to help by strictly drawing from ref, one will never improve by only drawing from the head, because they will constantly make their same mistakes over again. Im sure you know one of the basic rules of improvement: draw from life. Could that not be called a reference?

StylesDavis, thanks! :)

wasssup, I know 3 possible meanings of ID - Identification, Industrial design and id. The last meaning is the most interesting - id, as a subconsciousness. It fits your words even better than IDesign :)

thx Wasssup, yep, this is what i meant ... maybe i'm a bit offensive in my words, but you just have to keep it cool. Wink

zhuzhu, this is an english board, and english isn't my mother-tongue, too. And well, your english isn't too bad and im sure, this discussion improved it a bit. Wink And im not gonna nitpicking just because your english doesn't sound perfect(mine isn't perfect too).

Drawing from head doesn't mean not to feed your head with new information.
The basic is still to receive visual information - but imho you don't have to put those directly on the canvas. Just go outside and see "the sky is blue today" ... than go somewhere else, and next day if you paint something again remind the "blue" sky and paint in your newest picture a blue sky.
The key is "imho", just as Spooge say, "think more, paint less" ... and if you just use your head, no reference, than you'll automatically think more.
(This doesn't mean, direct reference is always a bad thing.)

And hey, zhuzhu, you're talking about all your paintings are just practice ... so i say, then no matter if they are trash.

And one last thought: Do you think you will ever get the point where you think "now i can control shape lighting and color so well to paint complete without ref easily"? Well, what is easy, and what is "well enough". Without ref will ever be a hard cut and make your life harder.

PS: No, im not the policeman of sijun, and what i say isn't the plain truth (only my opinion) - and yes, you're as free in choice as i am and you can show as many half-copied women as you wish.
I'll never say anything about your way here in this thread again if you feel better then. But i wish, everybody would say, if he think im going the wrong direction or making mistakes so i can think my way over.

helltaxi: dont believe that I ONLY paint and draw from my head. of course I draw anatomy from bridgeman, copy from masterworks and more.. so I store shapes, colours, values library in my head. but when I'm creating a piece, then I like better to think a lot how to make those objects, composition i.e. stimulating my brain as "3d application" . I found that painting from my head in three months and making A LOT of errors, mistakes, I did improve A LOT, much more than I was copymachine during the whole year without thinking much, understanding values very well

Ironically many believe that Duracel is nitpitcking or being offensive. but really, Duracel want help some members here. Come again, losers Very Happy
