Darren Aronofsky films:
Pi
Requiem for a Dream

Satoshi Kon films:
Perfect Blue
Millenium Actress - Especially this one.
Tokyo Godfathers

David Linklater films:
Tape
Waking Life

And the Iron Giant, just because it deserves to be in any list.

All of these films are available on DVD here in the states (except for Tokyo Godfathers), if your looking for a film that's actually still in theaters, might I recommend The Triplets of Belleville?

"Requiem for a Dream" is a film I never want to see again, but one that I also wish everybody I care about would watch.

"Amadeus" is also fantastic.

So is "Memento"

These aren't particularly rare, but not to be missed.

And if you see only one terrible stinker of a movie during your lifetime, make it the entertaining "Bride of the Atom". It's even more hilarious than Plan 9 from outer space, or even "Manos - the Hands of Fate".

watmough if you liked grave of the fireflies you should watch the other Ghibli films, like Whisper of the heart.

i liked the sonatine (got to love the sumo on the beach scene Wink ) but hanabi was too boring for me. my favorite Takeshi Kitano Mafia themed movie is Brother.

gezstar Smile sure ill watch it, its on my list.

grave of the fireflies was mentioned twice already and Ragnarok suggested Whispear of the heart from ghibli so i guess anime is allowed in this thread.

if i was sugesting some of ghibli movies to a person that his anime knowledge ends on dragonball and ninja scroll i would suggest

Laputa: Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
and already mentioned GOTFF

then if you really like them try stuff like
Porco Rosso
Kiki delivery service
Whispear of the heart

My all time favorite anime movie is The Wings of Honneamise. I love it.

Ok now for a change some "typicall" good movies:

smoke and then watch
brooklyn boogie
same characters in those movies but those film are pretty different

oDD, if you liked those you should watch Princess Mononoke, Nausica of the Valley of the Wind, The Cat Returns and Spirited Away (all from Ghibli).

I loved Dolls but I haven't seen the other Kitano films, I'll try to find them.

I was profoundly dissapointed with Dreacatcher. Such a great book that wasn't remotely done justice.

I love 50's sci-fi.
-The Day The Earth Stood Still
-Invasion of the Body Snatchers (my favorite)
-War of the Worlds

I also love silent movies, like Dracula and Metropolis.

The story lines are so much fresher in the classics, they had so much more kick to them!

It's about time that someone mentioned Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. I'm pretty much addicted to his movies. His worlds are so absorbing and paintstakingly rendered that when I watch Spirited Away (or anything else) for the 20th time, it doesn't feel like I'm seeing a movie, but more like visiting a different extension of myself (or-something-similar-but-not-quite-so-metaphysical).

Also, for those of you who are less acquainted with the finer points of Sam Peckinpah, I would strongly suggest purchasing a copy of The Wild Bunch. Marvel at the graceful composition of each shot. Laugh along with Ernest Borgnyne, wrap yourself in the film's score. Shake your head in disappointment when you realize that they no longer make movies like this.
