You can find here a nice proggie, still in its beta phase, that will possibly save some hours of Photoshopping to some of you...

Am I missing something? or is that just a useless program that does nothing more than can be done in photoshop with practically the same number of steps. Yeak ok... it may be useful to some, fair enuf.

1.- Did you try it?

2.- It is free. Maybe for those who just want to create this kind of effects with their photos and don't want to spend so much money in Photoshop/Elements, it is a decisive factor.

He doesn't talk about the algorithms he uses. I don't understand why it needs the reference image. It makes me skeptical that the program is doing something stupid.

Here's a method that's probably better http://www.cc.gatech.edu/cpl/projects/graphcuttextures/#interact

Which, even better than free, is published. So anyone can do whatever they want with it.

Rychan, am I missing something? What exactly can I do whatever I want with? The algorithm? Gee thanks. BTW, I heard there are free houses available not far from here. Just come on over with your axe, cut down some trees, saw them up into lumber... heck it's easy.

Yes, the algorithm. You're trying to trivialize it by making a poor real world analogy. As if you're giving me an algorithm to build a house. To make your analogy correct, you could say that I had to go cut down some trees and saw them in to lumber, and then anyone after me could get a house with no effort. Such is the nature of computer programs. One person can implement it and anyone can use it. (of course it has already been implemented or there wouldn't be results)

What if I had given you information on a better way to paint? would you scoff at me for giving you an algorithm?

I'm saying this guy has made a tool that can be improved, just like any artist might comment on how a painting might be improved. I'm saying his algorithm is poor like you might call someone's brush technique poor. You're an artist (maybe?), I'm a computer scientist.
