I read on the site that they don't take digital artwork on the contest, its slightly insulting but understandable. I guess. Kind of ironic how alot of the graphics (if not all) were done digitaly for the movie, perhaps even the concept art. Anyway, I just wanted to throw this out there to see how this made you feel as a digital illustrator.

"Second, digital art and traditional artapples and oranges come to mind. Its tough for the judges to compare artistic forms that are so completely different."

This bit I don't agree with. I see digital as another medium, along with oils and pastels and whatnot. I'll agree with the first paragraph on digital theft, but a way to potentially combat this further is get more judges, giving a wider knowledge of artists work, making it easier to spot a copy.

Hmm... Am I insulted? Slightly offended, sure. So many artists that are primarily digital that'll get excluded. *shrugs* Their loss I guess. @:-/

people who can't see if an image is traced or not shouldn't be alloud to judge an artcontest, they would have a hard time separating oil from painter etc

and well, I agree with brain, it's just a differen media

Your right, even I can spot a digital rip. Even so, I guess its different if you use an overhead projector, or have photo-references pinted on canvas to paint over (as esteemed mainstream SF/F artist Stephen Youll admits to). Nothing wrong with that, jsut don't herd out the digital based on paranoia. Because there are a couple things you jsut can't fake regardless of filters;
A. Composition, you can't fake it. Its good or it isn't
B. Use of light and color, even if it is filtered, if you use it well, you are using an artistic ability.
C. Clothing, and enviromental setup. Trying to emulate Tolkien atmospphere and style with filters would be a challenge if not impossible or other would ahve already done it.

I guess the biggest question to me is: " Why not have digital and a traditional one?". Anyway, I got bent about it because I was a traditional oil painter for 14 years and gave it up for health reasons (for me and my familyr) and have been digital completely now for 4 years.
Digital is just another medium, and my paintings still take 80-100 hours to do, some things jsut can't be faked.

i agree. digital is just another media. what some must also remember is that inorder to create something good on the comp u need to be good at what shane said but u also need to be good at creating FORM. the computer cant make form with any kinda of filter. (by form i mean correct proportions, motion, shit like that). if a nood draws somethin on paper and it looks waked out, itl still be waked out on the comp, becuz the computer can only do so much for u (like providing paint and brushes without the mess). So yea, igess what im trying to say is that it takes just as much skil to do something on the comp as it does on paper. tho digital theift would b pretty easy, and i can understand why they would exclude digital work.
