ok, i haven't drawn in probably close to 4 years, and haven't been on these boards for about the same... but, i've made a decision to go study art, so tonight i sat down for the first time with a pencil and paper to draw, in years. tried drawing a friend of mine, took me about an hour or so, but this is what i came up with. I'd like advice on what pencils to use, to get a softer more controlled effect. i don't think mechanical pencils are my style...

Nice. How big did you draw?
I think you made some bad decisions when you decided how thick the lines should be.
The hair over the eyes too strong, the teeth too strong ... and so on
And the eyes seem more like in a front view than the rest of the head IMO.
Not sure about that though.

Get harder pencils when you draw small.
You can use soft ones when you draw big.

Resize the image more the next time. It's big!

it's actually pretty decently sized... it takes up all of 11x8

Ok. Then I think you shouldn't worry about the pencil choice.
Just try to think more about the thickness of the line before you draw it ...
and try not to correct the lines. Draw them in one confident motion if possible.
