My main problem is the background/composition. Since I learned anything about it from the teachers in art class, should I leave it blank on the painting or should I fill it up dark or darker than the rest of the background?

It's my first year in art class and I'd like some help, the oil is drying and I don't like to white over whatever I've painted,

the featherstroking in the top background. A no-no, at least in my opinion.

I kinda like how you haven't gotten too close to the edge with the feathering yet, to give the parts where the light is bouncing off a glowing effect. I'd try to keep that if you can. I agree that the feathering doesn't look right yet. Your figure is too well defined to use something like that in the background of your final piece. Also the big area of white needs to be dealt with in some way. Decide what it's going to be and make it look like that. If your'e going to keep the band, at least work on it in some way to give it the same overall feel as the rest of the picture.

Great picture. Keep working at it! Smile
