Hey all. What do you have to say about this? I wonder how it comes across. It's suposed to be an illustration of a Celtic myth about a king who is walking around under water (with his magic shoes of course) and comes across a serpent that scares him so bad his face is permanently screwed up. I'm wondering if it works without seeing the beast at all or should I include a hint of what he's scared of. Any comments about anything else like composition, color pose etc would be great.
Thanks, Ted

This is just incredible. I love it. The face is perfect. I'd say it needs a little something extra to convey that he's looking at something terrible, because without the explanation I wouldn't have interpreted it that way. |

I skipped reading your text, and my uninitiated impression was that he looked like he was having a heart attack because of the fish. Maybe you can have a big, curling shadow fall over him from the right? Also, I'd make the face even more unnaturally grotesque. Sounds like a scary story!
Great work by the way, the celtic knotwork looks natural and well rendered. _________________ www.torsteinnordstrand.com |

i did that one quickly yesterday when I was still thinking the fish was his focal point... sorry about that, but since i made it, why not post it. anyway my changes are mostly in the construction of the image, and not about the rendering in itself.
made more space to the background - tried using the green thingies in a more frightening way, curling like snakes, actually. the idea is to use the background to tell about the situation of the character, heart attack isn't a peacefull pleasant time, i guess ) i also added some heavy movement in his hair ( not for the sake of realism, he's under-water-and-all-that, clearly not the point here, but because it helps bringing out the idea of strong emotion/fear IMHO ) removed the seaweeds in the corner, pitchblack deepsea helped detaching the shape of the fish, leaving more room to the imagination; again probably helps to convey the idea of unknow/fear...
looking forward to see your finished piece. just my two cents, again. I just love these kind of weird folk tales, amazing illustrations ideas in them.
thanks for the inspiration.
