My family and I were visiting with some Swedish friends in Northern New Jersey over Christmas and, for the first time, I saw a book on a Swedish illustrator named John Bauer. I am astounded that I have never heard of him before, He was born in the late 1800's and died tragically in his 30's in a boat accident. Brian Froud and even Jim Henson have surely been influenced by his work. Here's a link to a website

I love his work. I grew up with his storybook illustrations. His work is very well known here. I'd almost be shocked if I met someone in sweden who hasn't seen this illustration:

But I don't think that many know him by name, or that he is swedish.

oh yeah john bauer has since long been a great favourite of mine. Thanks for the tip zaar, I might check that museum out too Smile

He's not well known in the USA... but I do recognize the illustration zaar posted... I've seen it before... beautiful!
