I ordered broadband service from streamyx, and they came to install the modem and the dialer. The modem is just a USB connection, with no need for a driver. The dialer software installed halfway, and just hangs. Then, my PC would hang each time I tried to reboot--until it told me that a system file was corrupted. I tried to repair Windows 2000 Pro, and it didn't work. Finally, I reinstalled Windows, and tried installing the dailer again, and it worked. BUT, when I tried to reinstall the driver for my RAID-0, the same thing happened again--the PC now tells me that ntdetect cannot detect Windows on my PC.

My educated guess is that somehow, Streamyx's dailer software conflicts with my RAID-0 driver--and it causes a corruption in my Windows system files.

So, what can I do about this? Either cancel my broadband service and live without it, or give up my RAID-0, which contains one 80 GB harddrive, and one 200 GB harddrive? (I have two 40 GB drives that are not on RAID-0, and one of them is the main drive for Windows). The tech support at Streamyx are pretty clueless, so I don't expect them to be able to solve this.

What exactly is this dialer? My broadband just plugs into my router... no dialing involved. Perhaps you could investigate the option of using a router, in the long run its safer too, because most script kiddies can't see past its IP. That is of course if they can provide you with an alternative connection option other than usb. Another possibility, rather silly suggestion... but have you tried plugging it into one of the other available usb slots? anyway... just suggestions. I'm no expert.

After reinstalling Windows and the 2 RAID rigs I have twice, I finally got everything working together. I still have NO idea what the hell happened. . ..

Dialing in...

I believe what he means is PPPoE or Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. It is common nowadays for high speed providers to require a "dialer" installed to make the connection to the server. In some ways this is good, because it means that your box will not be connected and potentially open to the outside unless you want it that way. You connect when you want to, and after so many minutes of idle time you will be disconnected.

Sometimes there are different versions of PPPoE between server and client; this can cause problems, but first make sure your authentication handshake is correct before looking into it.

If you have a router then the router usually has a control panel for setting your PPPoE connection parameters (you just go in and put your authenication parameters in place), so you never have to do it - the router will automically do it for you whenever a network application is launched to the "outside".

Finally get rid of the USB modem. I cannot think of a single soul I know that has ever been happy and trouble free with it. Bellsouth.net actually phased out USB modems, because so many people were having issues with them. They sucked. I am inclined to say that the USB modem was probably your problem. Ethernet is the only way to go, IMHO.

I know how annoying it is when hardware conflicts - or software for the hardware. It's horrible, especially if you can't find the problem.

Doh, I mistyped before. It's actually an ethernet connector modem.

And I still don't know what happened. I hope it stays ok for a long long time. I can't remember how many times I've reinstalled windows in the last 2 years. . ..

Doh, I keep typing the wrong stuff. What I meant was that I have one RAID for my 80 gig, and one for my 200 gig. The 80 gig RAID could be installed without installing it before Windows. But, the 200 gig RAID has to be installed as a third-party driver before you even install Windows(there's a prompt for it when you first pop in the Windows install CD, asking you if you have third party stuff to install).

I tried ghost once, and for some reason, it didn't really work. Maybe I did something wrong. I might try it again.

i think your problem with 2k and the 200Gb drive is that you need l8r than SP3 b4 M$ supported that size disk..

Actually, I got it to work without SP3. I just installed the RAID driver BEFORE installing Windows 2000, and it worked fine.
