...um, actually, yes!
This is a piece for a sort of scifi pinup-ish calendar project I'm part of. The scene is of a Martian springtime dust storm approaching, and the obviously female explorer is admiring the view, with some obvious risk, given her distance from the station. Rendered in GIMP, over the last 4 days or so, not sure exactly how much time spent (one all-nighter in there), original size 2200 x 1600 pixels (hardware limited).

An awesome piece indeed and I really love the way you have rendered it. One thing though, I dont think that big rock fit into the picture, I made an overpaint on your picture so I hope you wanted tips and such with your picture.
Alternative objects instead of the big rock could be a crashed ship or some other big un-explained object. I added a sand-storm since the picture was named dustfront.
Well I hope the overpaint is ok, otherwise feel free to beat me up after this text here:
see you

Very cool idea. Well rendered too, the illumination makes it look like some kind of alien environment. The only crit would be to integrate the girl into the perspective (i.e. be able to see her feet), as well as the rock. Otherwise it all looks a little disconnected. But the image is fantastic.

awesome... but i gotta say i agree with mathew... it'd be a lot better if there was something she was looking at. i think some crazy alien ruins or something would be awesome. but its your picture, you do with it as you like ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ check out my webpage @ http://www.evanart.com/ |

Hey, thanks for the responses! I have to admit that there really wasn't a strong "master plan" to the composition- it was more dictated by time constraints than anything else. From about halfway through, I had thought of half a dozen better ways I could have composed this, but with only a couple of days to work, I had to make do with what I had. She's supposed to be looking at the approaching dust storm, but in the initial sketch I had planned for her to be shielding her eyes from the sun. Only after I scanned the drawing did I have the idea to move the light source to above and just behind her head. This left me with the awkward problem of what to do with her hand up there. The very last element I added was the telescope/magnifier thing, suggesting she's clearing the dust from the helmet surface in front of it. Overall, I'd say it's a highly-polished mud fence. It sits well with the coordinator of the calendar project, though, so I'm not too worried about it now. I do want to do more realistic extraterrestrial-themed illustrations like this, a la Chesley Bonestell (one of my early art heroes).
oh, and about GIMP- yeah, I use it because I'm currently somewhat poor and too much of a boy scout to use a dirty copy of PS or Painter. |
