thanks mari! It rained about 3 feet in two days and there was a lot of water in the basement. I am dreaming away and my loving wife wakes me at 7 am with "I don't mean to alarm you, but there is a foot of water downstairs..." OK, I on it.
Rainer wolfcastle hehe. i have to do everything myself, because 1) I am cheap and, 2) rich absentee landowners from all over the world who need home and garden maintenance have ruined the market for help. Nobody will talk to you if you don't have a big warm pulsating wallet. How does 150 bucks to cut the friggin grass strike you? Every week? So I do it.
Xia, I have been invited to give three talks, one in Honolulu, one in Detroit, one in Chicago. Dates are not set. The nerves are starting already.

Perhaps someone can give me some input. there are a couple things that I am struggling with. one of which is addressing value and color simultaneously. Value is value and that is fine but I dont really have a strategy for going directly in with color without a value study first. another problem i have is making my curtains of depth look like cutouts. how can I better transition between layers? i think part of the problem is that I never really understand the form that I am rendering. any suggestions? _________________ Whenever you draw or paint journal all of your discoveries. |

XIA, Many thanks there XIA and also for the reply to my pm, thank you. :)
This is the complex way I work:
On this one I started off to paint a fish and I added bubbles and stuff in the background but after a while things got out of hand and then I started a sketch above everything, then you have a nice background and can only add a character above it all, crazy I know.
Complementary colors is really a whole new world, works like a charm. :)

Dr. Missle-usually I post art, but this is a good question. IF you go to conceptart.org, I have a color art tutorial posted, and a new one I will be posting this week on the same subject.
The big thing to remember is that color IS value. Take any color photo into photoshop and duplicate it, tunr the dupe into a black and white, and look at teh two next to one another. The colors are values. The values reflect the lightness or darkness of the object, and the color is usually not a true out of the tube color we might be familiar with. Or you may not if you have never painted with paints before. My color tutorial has a color chart that shows the effect of the colors when you view them in black and white.
That is a start. I dont want to rewrite my entire tutorial again, but look out for the new one soon, and go look for the other.
Take care.
Ron
ps, great sketches. Really nice moods you captured... |

Dr. Missle: I wouldn't worry about color too much. The color choice looks good to me.
I guess you know enough theory. I think the textures don't really help with defining the forms.
They flatten the images and give importance to the wrong areas.
Did you look at his website fredflickstone?
Generally Ron's advice is good though.
I'd look at images (art or photos) how certain feels are achieved
(an example would be: flowers for "elegant") and steal there
Another image that I might have posted before ...
Not sure!? Gimp / mouse. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

that is cool Mon, thanks for doing that. I can't work that way in BW, I would love to, seems like a lot of fun.
Those rocks are an extension of an earlier painting that was just the bottom. That is why it no match too good. I was looking at how T Cole and Bierstadt painted maountains, but not Church, he was not as stylized. Then the word came down, no more 19th century! Maxfield Parrish is now "it". So I never finished it, the right side was the only thing that got much attention. I'l post the Parrish one sometime.
This is not as dark and blurry in the original, promise. damn shiny paint.
