I got Painter in Version 6.1 and it is great, but it often crashes without any warning or error-Messaging!
Painter freezes and I cannot do anything than to close it.
My sytem is Windows Xp Prof.
P4 3.06, 1024Ram...
Painter Classic and 7 worked fine , no problems there, but 6 really pleased me. Hope someone could help? _________________ http://www.raygun.de.vu |

Hi Aimok. I'm running the same version but on Win 2K. Painter will crash every time something pops up over my screen (like a game or an Outlook reminder), so I tend to save lots. Painter doesn't crash randomly on my system though so you might want to try re-installing it, and if that doesn't work try changing to Win 2K (if it matters enough for you to change operating system).
Hope that helps ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ -------------------------

Hi,
I'm running Painter 6.1 on WinXP Home and have it set to run in compatibility mode with Windows 98/Windows ME.
I don't recall having it crash yet and it's been a few months, though I have to admit I don't use Painter 6.1 often, only to test things when I'm teaching or answering questions.
Highlight the Painter61.exe file, right click and choose Properties, click the Compatibility tab and in the Compatibility Mode section, choose Windows 98/Windows ME from the drop down list.
Also, close other programs while using Painter 6.1.
After each Painter session (or at least every hour or so), close Painter, go to the main Painter 6 folder and delete the Pre-built Brush File. It'll be regenerated the next time you open Painter.
Also delete the Painter.ssd file (default Painter Scripts library) after each Painter session. It too will be regenerated the next time Painter 6.1 is opened and you'll have a new, empty.. and small.. Scripts library.
Keep your brush libraries and art materials libraries in their original condition by creating custom libraries to store your custom brushes and art materials. Otherwise, the libraries can grow too large and affect Painter's performance, just as the Pre-built Brush File and Scripts library can also affect Painter's performance when they become too large.
Do regular system maintenance: Run ScanDisk and Defrag at least once a week.
Clear out browser cache and temp files frequently, even several times a day depending on what you've been doing.
Good luck, and Happy Holidays!
