I am with zaar. The only reason i was excited for their customizable shortcuts is because i thought i could bind it to color picker. Maybe its somehow available through the scripting system they talked about... would have to look into it.

I have messed a little with the scripting, but so far not come across a way to just make the color picker pop-up. I should do some more research on that though, because if one has got a script opens it, the script can then be connected to a keybord button.

If I had a shortcut to the color picker I'd be able to always work in fullscreen with no palettes open at all. I love that one can move/pan the painting in the fullscreen mode just like one always has been able to in painter.

Yeah exactly. I have to go TAB>CLICK every time i wanna pick a color. Such a drag. I went through the whole COM API last night, there doesn't seem to be anything obvious that will do this. I'll keep looking.

If you're have no palettes up and need the color picker it might be faster to press F6, it only brings the color palette up. Which is less annoying than having all the palettes appear. The color swatches there are smaller then the ones on the tool palette and you might need a fem more millisecond to aim, but complaining about that might be a bit hysterical... Very Happy

Question, why upgrade? I have been using 5.0 since I learned about photoshop and have never upgraded.

Yikes! If you're on a PC upgrade to 5.5 at least, 5.0 had a bug that would cause it to improperly save a file resulting in a total loss of work. I had it happen to me twice and it happened to a guy at work once too.

I don't know if Mac 5.0 had the problem or not.

I've been using CS now for about three weeks. My experiences with it are rooted soley in web based UI / site development. The single most thing I really enjoy - makes me happy - is hierarchal, nested layers within layers. From the standpoint of site design this is awesome, because it allows me to compartmentalize the visual elements of the page. The header/masthead is seperate; the columns are seperate, the banners are seperate, and within those seperations are further seperations - that's the strength. The header might be a nested layer, and in there you'll find a nested layer for the navset, a nested layer for the branding and so on. I love it. I can now "see" more clearly where stuff is in the layers palette - no more stacks of linked layers.

The Save Layer function rocks too, as it allows for experimentattion within the file itself without having to "Save as" multiple files.

Another golly gee whiz is "type on path" functionalities. I now can do stuff that I had to do soley in Illustrator. Word.

Tom, if by "nests" you mean layer sets, that's a feature of PS 7 as well. But it's really comforting to hear that nothing's annoying the hell out of you Smile

Is there anybody else who wants to contribute with some new anecdotal evidence? Is there any reason (besides monetary) why a digital painter should NOT put an upgrade on his/her x-mas wishlist?

Yes I know Smile
I thought that my post might be confused with version 7. What I mean is nested layer sets withing the default layer set - hierarchal layer sets within a master layer set. Painter has been doing that for years, and I am surprised that it's taken Adobe this long to get to it.

Example: let's say you're working on a composite editorial illustration; you might have a default layer set for the face of a character titled "Face"; within that set you'd have another set titled "left eye" that would house left eye details; then another titled "right eye", and so on and so on...

It's my opinion that this feature has been lacking for many, many years.

Keep in mind that I use Photoshop at a lower webcentric resolution for output, so I cannot say I have any of the other issues, scratch discs specifcally, that others here are having.

matte painting is making a background or shot in a film appear to be something its not..

ie. in galdiator when you see rome, most of that is either cgi or matte painting..
