I just recently finished this painting. I hope I can find the pencil to post with it...I have to look a moment. The drawing is on 18 x 24 bond paper, the painting is 18 x 24 done in Painter 8. I enjoyed not having to waste a good illustration board a few times over.
I still dont think of it as finished, but I have to let go of it sometime.
COmments, Crits are welcome.
Thanks
Ron

You know for some reason I think I prefer the pencil. Let me see if I can figure out why. Aha, I think I know! It is the movement and swirls in the background of the pencil. They are lost or dead in the painted version. But other than that, yeah, I enjoy it! _________________ "Me? I'm a pop idol."

Thanks, I agree, the water is lacking something, but the swirls were too much in paint. It looked too Van Gogh with a sense of realism in the foreground. An unlikely match. THis is one area I am totally unhappy with, and I plan on rectifying it.
Thanks again for the comment.

I think making a darker horizon line in the water behind him would help it a lot. Think of the way it feels to walk into a large warehouse with it's vast unused space. I've been diving before and the ocean has that feel to it when you get deep and look up to the surface. Very thrilling.
I saw the sketch back when you posted it on CA. Love the composition and the painting looks great! |

I remember this drawing! It looks great! The painting needs work... actually you could watercolor (digi) over the pencils and it would probably look better! |

Hey Ron, long time no see.
Glad to see you're still meddling around with the paintbrushes I like the overall design of the fish-type humanoid, although some things in the background seem to lack something... Maybe some depth created by some sort of 'fog'.
The bottom characters seem a little hard to make out, maybe adding a few faint illuminated facets could help?
Hope to see you hang out here,
Francis. |

Very nice, but I prefer the pencil version over the painted one anytime. It got more character, more "style". |

With the risk of getting Strangled I am doing this anyway, there are a lot of guys that dont like when I am over-painting pros pictures since I am not a pro myself. I hope you wont be angry.
I actually liked the painting more than the drawing but I think the painting was lacking of this swoosh the other guys were talking about, I also think this picture would benefit from a warmer color balance so I changed this in the over-paint.
When adding bubbles you get the feeling of motion but I think I overdid it with the bubbles. I guess the left leg is being pushed forward while his right leg is pushed backward and his whole body is twisting to the right, this you can add bubbles all the way, like a twist.
Loomis made a picture which really had this swoosh in the picture, he actually added fishes in the motion spiral, pretty cool. I am adding that picture beneath here.
ok I hope you are ok with over-paints. :)
Otherwise I love this picture, very nice. :)
Overpaint
Andrew Loomis picture, really neat. :)

see you and have a nice day

I don't like the detail in the second one. Its not clean enough, and this loses things. For example, the captian looks more like an amish guy (because of the hat) and less like a crusty pirate. _________________ It has been clinically proven that other people's pain IS funny. |

I don't there's any need of a drastic change of colours like that (refering to the paintover), but I prefer the pencil over the actual painting (original), because the painting lacks some of the contrast and defining shading that the pencil got. (An example could be Abes shorts, which looks much more defined in the original pencil.) However, I gotta say I really like the rendering of light through ocean surface on the ocean floor. And the pencil is really, really (, really) good looking.
Imo, the paint is a very good start but needs some more work before it's finished - as things still blurs into each other, clogging it up in blurry midtones.
So when will you do Hellboy & the rest of the crew? ;) |

Thanks everyone, including Matthew for the paintover. I have mulled over all the suggestions, and I am printing them all out so I can finish this sucker off. I have been staring at it way too long and didnt know what to do with it anymore. That, and I have never been underwater, that makes it a bit tough to reflect on the experience objectively.
Thank you all again, And Matthew, that paintover was great, a bit too brownish, but great for suggestions. Thanks so much
Thank you all again, I will post the redo when it is done.

Ron!
Nice work. One thing I see in the drawing and not in the painting is that the skeletons at the bottom seem to have a ghostly luminance that's missing.
So where you been, bro? Haven't heard from you for awhile!

hi Ron, i like your design, especially the expression on his face, really great! though, i have to agree on what people mentioned above about the underwater lighting. i think lit under water works basically quite the same as in atmosphere, we can imagine water is just like mist or something. and as i see in the original one that contrast in background flaunts a bit too much here and there IMHO, which really tampers the depth of the pic. otherwise its a very beautiful piece!
sorry for my cheesy little try, pushed the contrast back a little.
btw, thank you for sharing those tuts, amazing drawings!!!

And oh, if the lightpattern from the waves reach down to the bottom, Abe should have a similar pattern on him (and perhaps more defined, I don't know how sharpness/strength reduces in water) - as he is closer to the surface.
(..even though you might wan't to skip this to keep the image clean. But still, just thought I'd add it if you wanted some more of that suicidal art-challenge that everyone just love in it.) |

I totally love the Abe character, but to me the boat wreck doesn't work quite so well. In fact I didn't even realize it was a boat until I saw the sketch. I'd love to see more actually boat wreckage - more visual clues - and also a little more exageration of distance (ie. fogging or something).
But the rendering of Abe is very classy. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

I know the feeling! Hey Ron, good to see you back here.
This is just a thought in picture form, not sure if it helps at all.
The only thing concrete I could say about lighting is the extreme atmospheric effects that happen underwater. Things quickly diffuse. Also, the light source is the whole surface of the water, and this would make the lighting very diffuse as well, no core cast shadow system at all. Probably the local value difference between the pants and skin in shadow would be hard to see. Atmospheric perspective also clamps the lights as well, so that collar on the dutchman really come forward.
edges would start at totally lost and come up to soft at their shapest.
But that Loomis is neat, it shows "underwater" in a totally different way, the hair and the sea creatures. So there are so many ways to do things.
And thanks for doing those drawing tutes, they have helped me.

Zing Pow...Wow this is great. I have some serious insight into doing this painting now. A game plan, and some need to create beyond what one may think a traditional painting should be. I am now beginning to see past the trap of paint and brushes alone.
Thank you Craig for the tips. That paintover did again, what you have done for me many times over. You helped me see clearly a bigger pathway. I have been obsessed lately with trying to help get everyone to see clearly at our school, that I profess too much classisism. Spelled wrong.
In teaching and preaching, I am falling into the trap of caught up in traditions. We are to exceed traditions and carry them forward if we are illustrators of our times. I am falling too far back into an old school way of thinking. I cant let myself get caught in that rut.
Again Craig, you are one of the first I saw stretching the linits to traditional art, and added something more. I need to folow this mantra more often. Thank you again.
And you are absolutely welcome for the tutorials. ANything to help, there are plenty more to come.
Thanks everyone, everyones input is a great help.
